Unlike you two, I actively sought out low grade books.
When I was at a con, I’d concentrate on big hero books first, and with the left over $30 or so, I’d find a PHM or three. They were always there, and always fun.

I was the same way pal. I just wanted the books and a vg fit the bill much better than a vf for me, mostly because I could get more of them! I was lucky though, we had guys like John Hauser coming into town with clean mid-grade copies with killer pages and they were very affordable, especially when you picked up a stack!  (thumbsu

Yeah, when I was a kid, it wasnt just cash that was limited, the comics were very limited too, here in the UK we didnt have many comic shops and the few we did have didnt have access to a lot of stuff as it wasnt always distributed, so you just had to grab anything you could, the grade wasnt even an issue for me, thats why my collection is all over the place condition wise.

There was a short lived bookshop near me that sold comics based on age

    1 x 1950s comic = £1.00

    3 x 1960s comics = £1.00

    5 x 1970s comics = £1.00

I pretty much always bought 5 x 1970s comics with my hard earned £1.00

I've always thought this was a cool little run and wondered why it ended, you know, beyond the obvious conclusion that it may not have sold well. Any actual insight on the topic gang? What's not to love? Kirby back at the company, drawing cover duties! Ditko, Kirby, Powell & Heck on the inside! Seems like a home run to me!

Yep, totally agree, cool run, I have upgraded my rough looking #1 but I must not have scanned it before it disappeared into the oblivion of my rooms, found this one though and I know you always get a kick out of seeing these British books :)

    War Heroes #7 (Ace; Feb 1953).  Grade = 2.5 GD+ ow-wh.  Price = $14.
Díck Beck, Bob McCarty, Ken Rice, and Chic Stone story art.  Looks great in the scans, but cover detached at top staple and barely hanging on (via a back cover tab) at bottom staple.  2½" split at spine bottom.  Cream to off-white inside covers.

    War Heroes #2 (Ace; Jul 1952).  Apparent Grade = 2.5 GD+ ow-wh.  Price = $8.
Lou Cameron, Jim McLaughlin, Bill Molno, and Ken Rice story art.  Difficult to detect, but cover has been reattached to interior via a thin bead of glue carefully placed along inside spine.  4" tear to upper half of back cover (does not extend to any edge).  Only one CGC-certified copy (CGC 7.0).

    War Dogs of the U.S. Army #1 (Avon; 1952).  Grade = 2.5 GD+ ow-wh.  Price = $150.
Highly-prized but seldom-seen Everett Raymond Kinstler cover.  Everett Raymond Kinstler, H.L Larsen, and Gerald McCann story art.  Tape along inside spine; not clear whether this was done to prevent detachment or repair it (cover paper is supple, and there's no splitting along spine).  Off-white inside covers.
