  1. I think I'll look for a better resolution image of that poster. It's really well done, even though I don't know who all of those weird people are. You aren't the first person to recommend the new Sandman series, but I think you've convinced me it's worth a read. I wonder if I could go to Barnes and Noble and read the graphic novels?

    Anyway, thanks for the information!

By the way, did you ever see Peter David's spoof of the "Endless" in the newest Captain Marvel? They were called the "Friendless". The reason being (quite literally) that they had no friends!

It was a poster done by Frank Quitely.

And yeah, I'd be highly surprised if you didn't like the Sandman books. They intertwine Cain and Abel and a lot of other DC characters into some great adult themed stories. There are some stand alone stories along with an ongoing central story. Sandman along with Swamp Things 2nd series were 2 series I was truly sad to see come to an end.

  2. No way! I've thought of reading this for some time. I might just give it a try. When I used to work at Borders Books, we had a Sandman Omnibus or something of the sort that had tons of issue rolled into one. It was pretty cool and I almost bought it, but wasn't sure whether I'd like it or not so I held off. That illustration is superb! What is it from? I'd like to see a higher resolution image of it.

Wow! He certainly looks menacing on those older covers of Unexpected. Too bad he turned into someone that both Cain and Able made fun of in Secrets of the Haunted House. A shame, really. He looks like someone who could wipe the floor with both of them in earlier Unexpecteds.

As it turns out he is one of the "Endless" and is quite a powerful entity, the eldest brother to Dream AKA Sandman from the 1980s series by Neil Gaiman.

A highly recommended series too. (Sandman)! (thumbs u

  3. This was another great list of books! Thanks for sharing!

Big thanks to everyone for chiming in and reading. Lots of fun.

    #5 Tales of Horror 8

How about a Toby book? One of the first precodes I bought and I am glad I did. I have never seen a nicer copy. VERY tough book. These Toby books also published the 3 issue series, Purple Claw and reprints some of those stories in here. They also recycled interior art for their covers like Superior. That is cheap and cheesy but I think that is the appeal with many of these...the cheese factor. So bad, its good. For some reason, this cover has always jumped out at me. Maybe it is the striking blood red background and a snake swaying open mouthed in the sky like some reptilian King Kong.

Anyway, not much more to say other thanI think this is a cover that would grab major attention if seen on a newstand.

Great choice on this one as it been on my radar for quite a while now. Very iconic cover and did you look close and notice the ever so tiny ant sized victims falling from the snakes mouth. A very tough book to find in HG and I'm still searching...

I've had #8 on my list for a while also.

The cover image from #8 originally comes from the first story of issue #3.

Like many Toby covers, it is recycled art. This time, the art was flopped and I like it better that way...makes for a good cover. Kind of like Horrific #3....

Yes, this Tales of Horror seems to be on a lot of want lists. I have yet to find a copy better than this one. There has to be some out there....just need to look harder I guess. Anyone have any copies, please post them. I would love to see a high grade or better yet, a high grade pedigree copy.

    Thanks again for reading!

Hey thanks! Is that the same Destiny that hosted Secrets of the Haunted House?

Hey can anyone tell me who the scary guy in the hood is on older covers of Unexpected (like issue 129)?

    Destiny

Yes. He patrolled around in Weird Mystery Tales and a few other mystery books before catching his own title.

  5. Thanks! I am unfamiliar with her Mr. Hepcat, but now I'm intrigued. I am going to read this series!

Here are scans of my four oldest comics featuring the Legion of Superheroes on the cover:

Who's the blond girl holding Supes's hands?? No wonder Lana's mad.

Zynthia of Xanthu, Star Boy's girlfriend. You see Superboy had got wind of Lana's inane plot to make him jealous so he turned the tables on her for a laugh.
