  1. Agree on the Lee/Williams X-MEN DPS. That is a real beaut. I can see that one blowing up in the live session
  2. I knew the Akira cels would go for big money, but I'm mad I missed the Astro Boy lots. Thought they went very cheap.
  3. Hadn't thought of that - great idea, thanks!
  4. That's the way I look at it. I'm slowly building up my Marvel & DC keys by targeting lower-grade examples. I also buy original art so there's only so much $$ to buy comics!
  5. My entry to the club is a beater copy, but still thrilled to have it!
  6. I've only been collecting since 2001-02, when I stumbled across original art pages on eBay. I bought a Dazzler page w/the FF on it for something like $15. Even at that point, which is now 20 years ago, eBay had tons of great pages. I bought a couple of 80s covers, including a Micronauts New Voyages one, for under $300. I remember being gobsmacked to see Bob Larkin's cover to the Empire Strikes Back Marvel Super Special issue pop up on eBay w/a BIN of $3000, which seemed astronomical to me. I waited 15-20 minutes before deciding to pull the trigger; too late, it was gone. Never seen that one pop up again. The comic art-l group is where I really started to learn about the hobby, and meeting other collectors. Probably the first conventions I attended to look for comic art were the Big Apple Cons held in the basement of St. Paul the Apostle church on 60th street, back when I was living in the city. just a few short blocks from my apt, I had the chance to see legends like Dave Cockrum in...2002, I think. I wish I had taken the time to talk with Gene Colan, Herb Trimpe, George Tuska and some of the other greats at that show. It's funny that, even though I started collecting in the 21st century, I feel like the hobby has completely changed. I can't imagine how different it must feel for longtime collectors who have been at it for way longer.
  7. No idea what it would sell for, but now is the time to find out, with the series fast approaching. Please post a link here if/when you do, as I'm sure I'm not the only one who would be interested.
  8. Dazz was originally supposed to be black, because JRjr designed her that way. It's why her dialogue in X-men 130 sounded different; Claremont thought she was supposed to be a black character. i interviewed Romita Jr among others involved with Dazzler's origin story for this video essay I did for SyFy
  9. WOW. Beautiful piece, but yeah. Sky-high for a recreation
  10. I remember that cover when it went on the auction block. I wanted to go after it but had no funds in my art piggy bank at the time. Just a great image... and published images of Stan are sooo hard to find! Definitely a bargain for the winning bidder...
  11. I remember when this was being offered up not too long ago on a dealer's website for what I thought was an outlandish price for a 70s X-Men cover not featuring the new team. Now, given how wild the market has become, that price doesn't seem so outlandish.
  12. Funny thing is, it's not the first time we saw the black costume. ASM #252 was published first; I would think the cover art to 252, which is a much better image anyway, could go for more than $3.3M.
  13. Watching the bidding for that Secret Wars #8 frankenstein page was thrilling and depressing at the same time....
  14. Agree with you, Scott. It's an awesome, memorable cover -- one of my favorites from the original What If? run. But that price is bonkers. I guess Bechara will be bumping up his ask for the What If? #1 cover now
  15. Raised nearly $900K for comics shops (adding up his sketches + the work of others who contributed to the cause). And not just doing standard head sketches -- so many of the pieces were absolute STUNNERS
  16. A superb page from a classic X-Men issue featuring the first appearance of Weapon Alpha/Vindicator/Guardian?? I don't see how that hammers at less than $100K ... Glen Brunswick better sell off all that Snake Eyes art, because I would bet Liefeld makes a strong run at this page.
  17. good lord, that is just a spectacular Wolvie DPS. Adam Kubert did some great work on that book
  18. I knew it would blow away the pre-auction estimate, but that's a strong finish! Love that album cover...
  19. I learned more about the GI Joe art market in this thread than I have in nearly 20 years as a collector....
  20. Byrne wanted to be left alone to do the story he wanted to do. After C.B. Cebulski first indicated to him that that would be the case, the terms changed. Creative control was what John wanted over the project. Editorial interference is why he left the last X-book he worked on, so he didn't want to go through that again. Big ego? Sure. But lots of creators want to have final say over their stories. I don't blame him at all for walking away from a situation that would have frustrated him.
