Nice grab. Love that issue. I’d love it a little more if that sticker was inside or the back cover at least…

I knew you would find this fun. I thought the art in this book might be of interest to comics folks. You just have to be the right age. I loved monsters and cars even at a very young age. The perfect storm.
I have a pretty decent collection of early ‘60’s “monster driving cars” artifacts. Although, my collection has slowed down, I still pick up things here and there.
Although the Roth stuff is top of the heap, I also have quite a bit of “Weird-Ohs”, Lindbergh Loony’s and related stuff as well. Like anything that gains popularity, there are always imitators.

Admittedly, besides EC Comics, GA isn't my bag. I appreciate the era and it's history and creators, but I prefer comics characteristic of my youth.
And I'm not sure if I even heard of Baker until my return to the hobby a few years back. Heck, it might've been @Funnybooks profile pic that initially turned me on to him.
Anyways, whether this is the start of a love affair or not (I understand his draw), I thought my collection ought to have an example of Baker's work in it.
Thanks to @Point Fivefor his advice last week when I was thinking about purchasing this book. And although I found it's contents online to read (https://comicbookplus.com/?dlid=21657), it'll be out of the slab and in Mylar by weekend's end.
A great choice and looks wonderful for the number grade. Glad to hear it is being cracked. A good decision. Baker is like crack. Hard to stop at just one.

Thanks for this. Always nice to put the person who put together these collections their rightful place in the hobby.

Amazing how cheap Planet Stories are compared to Planet Comics. Now, due to the great equalizer, graded, slabbed copies, I expect that gap to slowly start coming closer together. At the end of the day when all you have is the cover anyway…

Ah, Super Science Stories. In many ways, a dumping ground for lesser stories big name writers couldn't place elsewhere. Always worth a look, and most issues have a gem hidden, but they can be underwhelming until you figure out what the magazine is like.
I would disagree to a point. Some amazing covers with interior art by Finlay, Paul and Bok. I also enjoy the Ray Bradbury stories although I haven’t read them cover to cover.

I second this. I submitted books at WonderCon and had hoped to do the same at Torpedo. I just don’t like shipping valuble books through the mail. I would think your booth would be mobbed.

I agree with you on the wall book prices. I steered clear of them and spent the majority of my time box diving. And even though I feel I didn’t do as well this year as well compared to last year, I still think it’s a great show.
And yeah it’s funny, Dave Stevens fever was definitely in the air, but of course when I brought some to trade to dealers they were all like “Na, I’m good…”
Like I said, still a fun day out looking for comics! Here were my modest finds:
Smart move on box diving. Love the Jeep and First Love. Wall gazing is generally for suckers or those too lazy to dig the boxes. There was actually a time when virtually nobody looked in the romance boxes. Up until maybe 8 years ago, I was pulling Bakers out of boxes at guide. And guide was real reasonable on most.
Dave Stevens books, (God bless him) are mostly all common as dirt. I still pick up nice copies up at flea markets for a buck apiece.

Adventures Into the Unknown sold very cheap at the recent Heritage auction.
Though they never seem to be in demand and I'm the only person who likes those covers.
I finished off my pre code run last year. Other than #1, I got all of them in grades from 4.0-8.0 for $100. Or less. On some MUCH less. I held off completing the run until most of my other PCH runs were complete. ACGs are just so much less impressive other than a few outstanding issues. I suspect many other PCH collectors feel the same way.

#5 is the best cover in the run as well as most of DC’s funny animal output. But frankly, it, as well of most of them, are pretty much unreadable. Thusly, I don’t have too many of them.

Power 2 @ $610 not bad for a 2.5.
Spook 26 @ $562 sounds about right.
Holiday 5 @ $455 is pretty darn good for an ungraded 4.0! I was happy to see that!
4Most v8#5 - $810!!! Holy shnikies! I did NOT see that coming! Ungraded, pretty well creased up TRC, and an often overlooked adventure title. The only think I can think of is that there's only 1 on the census in 4.0. It's a great cover, but that's one heck of a result! I didn't have my 4Most issues pegged to be in my next submission, but I may have to rethink that...
Holiday 5 is a Cole masterpiece! Glad to see it getting the love it deserves!

Being a PCH guy like I am, I can see why you are attracted to the Matt Fox covers. I have been collecting and upgrading them for years. Problem is, others have discovered them and prices are escalating quickly. They have been somewhat common and available for years but are now pretty sucked up around here.

What I find unacceptable is that grading companies are easier on defects displayed by Golden Age comics than on the same defect displayed by a modern comic. That easing of standards plays right into every shyster's tired mantra of "Well it's mint for its age!" You know, just like any used car salesman.
But mint is mint. That standard doesn't vary with age.
Mint is simply a flavor of chewing gum. Period…

OK, this thread is officially closed! Was a lot better than I thought. Vintage PB's are definitely in demand and appreciated.
Invoices are out except for Andy @goldust40. For some weird reason, it just doesn't want to go through. Send me a PM and I will try and answer through that.
For those who I receive payment over the weekend, I will send out on Monday. Otherwise, a slight delay as I have a crazy week next week.
Postage has gone up again! "Ground Advantage" is sure no "advantage" to anybody but the Post Office... To make up for it, some of you might find a freebee or two just to fill boxes.
Thanks to all who have looked and even more to those who actually bought something. Sales threads are fun and sometimes clean out a little clutter. I never get rich but it still is fun. Until next time.

The lady had them priced at $10-40 each and she was selling them for half price. They were cover dated from 1928 up to the late thirties. I quickly snatched up most of them. Was considering even some of the real low grade ones when some guy grabbed the rest.
The funny part was there were a couple young flippers with their phones frantically trying to find prices on the two boxes of modern comics. When I walked up they just shoved the box of Blue Books at me trying to keep me away from what they were looking at.

I appreciate all of the kind comments made by everyone throughout the course of this thread; they have made my completion of the run even more satisfying. I'll finish by noting that, starting with issue #32, the title dropped “New” and became simply “Adventure Comics,” which is the title that remained until the series ended in 1983 with issue #503. Creig Flessel's classic shark/raft battle cover was an awesome way to introduce the new title.
Any plans to continue the run up to maybe #40 when the Sandman appears? So many cool covers there as well.
Thanks for posting these as a run and letting us live vicariously through you!
TorpedoCon 2024

I plan to attend although haven’t bought my ticket yet.
I agree about updating their website. I will go either way but sure would like to know what dealers will be attending. You know, they know by now. Just added incentive for those on the fence. WonderCon was just as bad. No list until a week or so before the show.
A couple years ago, Torpedo pulled the plug on their show. They said it was a “schedule conflict” but I suspect it might have been due to lack of pre show ticket purchases. I believe a lot of folks were waiting to see the dealer lineup. It is, primarily a vintage comic buying show. I would sure like to give my money to CGC at the show for some grading as well!
So, that being said, I will put my money where my mouth is and buy my ticket this weekend.
