None of the CDNP books are particularly tough, though some can get expensive. 26 is one of the few issues i don't see come up often.  Issues from 40 on (and some earlier) just aren't worth enough to slab for the most part, they tend not to sell for $100 or more unless they are high grade. There are currently 12 copies of 57 available on ebay.

Yes, and it's a good one!

You guys are seriously talking about spending $10K on romance comics?! :screwy:

When I think about how many people in this country who don't have a roof over their head or even enough to eat, I sometimes wonder about even spending $100 on a comic book. How fortunate we all are...

  3. My father in law was a Captain on a destroyer in WWII. He was due to come into  Pearl Harbor th day of the attack. They radioed him and ordered him to stay at sea. He came in the next day. He has photos he took off the bow of his ship of the destruction. One lucky guy. He met my mother in law while at liberty in Australia. After the war, he moved there for many years after marrying her. My wife was born there and lived there until she was 15 when they moved back here.

My uncle was a bomber pilot and flew 18 missions over Germany. Came back un-scathed luckily.

Lots of military service in my family. I lucked out being just a little too young for Vietnam.

While I don't have a photo of my Dad who luckily served in Germany during the Korean War era I do have a pile of the letters he wrote back home. In today's age of instant communication think back on what it must have been like to go down to the depot to see your son (no daughters then) leave for basic training and then to be assigned who knows where. There are stacks of these letters so they were the lifeline to keep in touch with the family and clearly my Grandmother kept them close and never disposed of them. Just to give you a taste here is what one would have looked like arriving at a small New Jersey beach community from my Dad to my Grandmom and Grandad in July 1954.

Awesome that your grandmother kept all those letters. I can't imagine having a loved one over seas and having to communicate via snail mail. They might be interesting to read.

Great photos and story Jimmers. Thanks for posting and honoring your grandfathers. What country did they serve? Canada? Great Britian?

There are a couple dozen that I love and could realistically win (.... and overpay ?) so I will have to do some serious thinking. They're cool about time payments, so I may need to square up on my outstandings and dip back into the debt pool again. GOD BLESS....

I finally put in my tracking bids on this one........... money is tight, but I really hope to get at least one smaller item or two.... I mean, they're Jon Berk's books :x GOD BLESS...

Me too Jimbo. I rarely if ever bid in the big auctions. Seems like every time I do I pay WAY more than I should. But, I'd really love to have a book or two from this fabled collection. Hopefully, you guys leave a few scraps for us lowly comic lovers...

  8. Yeah, those are killer. I only have a few Gaines file copies (most raw), but they all have their COAs. It's a shame so many of them were lost or discarded when CGC graded them early on. I have hesitated to send in COAs with books to be graded for that reason. Would they take photocopies I wonder?

I agree 100% I'm shocked any time I walk into a con and not asked to see what I have in my bag. I usually have a larger packsack for my comics and lunch and water etc..

I'd have 0 issues with a quick search. I know i'd feel a little safer at least.

I got searched going into Rogers Center for a Blue Jays game, Patted down going up the CN tower but walk into the comic con next door with over 100,000 people there and nothing...

And people openly flashing "fake" weapons...

I saw a handful of the DC Big 5 issues in the mid-90s (when the collection was discovered maybe?). My sole Salida is Fightin' Air Force 3.  Coincidentally it was the first slabbed book I ever bought as well!

I believe I heard or read the all the DCs went to one collector who still has them.  Most of the rest of the non DCs seem tied up in collections as well. Metro had about a dozen (all non DC) for sale I bought 5 or 6 Farrell and Harvey ones. I have seen a few Dells come up from time to time. Probably the best war pedigree collection.

  11. A lot of it was opportunity. Back in the day, one was able to purchase long runs of pedigree books all at once if one was well connected and had the dough. Jon bought what he liked that happened to be off the radar of most collectors. There is a lot of love, blood, sweat (and money) in this collection. Pretty much no matter how much money you have, I doubt you could pull this collection off today. The love of the medium really comes across in this collection.

I think it is most reflected in the art portion. He spent endless hours running down the artists and getting originals and recreations from just about all the greats in the biz. THAT would be impossible today.

Those are beauties-I love seeing how sharp Salidas are.

Thanks. They are tough to find. I have about 5 all bought at the same time from Metro. I don't think I've seen any for sale since. My understanding is that one collector owns most of them. About the nicest pages I've seen on a GA book.
