  1. Free market is what it is. If someone want's to pay insane amounts for the works of a (seemingly egomaniacal) newbie, please let them. It cuts into a budget, even if the budget is large and somewhat free spending. To compare oneself to a great, well that's a joke. Not a Killing Joke, nowhere near, but a joke nonetheless.
  2. If I saw it, I know I'd never purchase it...without needing to grab my glasses. But...see those thin background pencil lines? Just wondering now that if a few quick sketch lines inked, brushed or 'slaughtered' by someone else counts as the sketcher's original art? Sheesh, I take ten years off and it comes to this. So many collectors though with a voice, so cool.
  3. I'm not gonna quote the above, but that is close to art...you should get that certified.
  4. Just wondering, was it Voldy or the other guys that slabbed and verified the Da Vinci from Christie's last month?
  5. And don't forget .... this is the perfect time of year to hide art purchases....'Why no honey, please don't look at those statements, they have gifts on them.' Just saying, LOL.
  6. Simply put, I believe any and all positive and negative attributes of a page should be disclosed. Solves everything imho. Front, back, folds, stains, paste ups, tears, sketches, zip atone, tape, foxing, blue line, publishing stamps, glue, white out... you name it. I've only bought around a dozen pieces as I rebuild my collection, but I've always taken the onus upon myself to ask questions galore if I have a concern. I believe it is absolutely vital on internet purchases, whereas holding it in your hands and inspecting the piece in person solves that like it's the 1980's again (if only I could get those pieces and prices back LOL)...
  7. I saw that Tellos cover and wondered if anyone else had. Not my cup of tea, but usually I see Ringo get a lot more attention. Traffic seemed light on that auction group. Hope the new one is a little better, my first consignments with them in this new auction. And on a personal note, I've read negative and positive stuff about Clink...my experience to date has been professional, courteous, prompt and thorough responses to any and all questions, thoughts or concerns I've raised. Just my 2.5c (inflation).
  8. Thanks for sharing, a very interesting read. Sadly, these parallels (between the art worlds) will only increase as the hammer price on the top pieces rise. I'm no expert (did some art restoration using lasers in grad school), but this simply fails the eye test...and probably any true analysis done. My favorite quote... "As for Christie’s, as an auction house, it should be shunned by the art world, recognized for what it is — a hostile witness to art."
  9. Faxes for art, those were the days . Wow, that is one cool story. I saw it in the biting figure, the mouth's overall and the light wispy lines around the piece seem to have the right 'curve' so to speak. I don't have a lot of posts but I've been around a bit for what it's worth. My money would be on Davis, but it's not my money so I'd ask professionals
  10. I looked at this the other day, didn't see anything. This time as I was scrolling down, I saw something that made me say "Davis?"....so it does have that feel from layout to certain features surely. I've only seen 'finished' pieces by him mostly so that's the only reason I am questioning that thought.
  11. Personally, I see CAF as a 'fan's' tool. I'm there to learn and see, meet others with similar interests, admire, hate, etc. etc..... I get to see ton's of art that I simply don't search for in a buying environment. I understand the links leading to sales sites are everywhere on the pages. But...NOT everything on CAF is for sale, although I have managed to relieve one gentleman of a NFS Bianchi. On CAT I'm looking for items for SALE, not just to admire, discover new artists, envy the rich, etc, which is what I use CAF for primarily. I see something on CAT I know it is obtainable in some way usually....on CAF it varies. Another 2.5c
  12. Just discovered the 'track' due to this being bumped up near the top. I'm small time but pay attention to what's going on as I start buying again. This site saves me time and has led me to dealers I didn't know existed, many with pieces I have put on a list in order of wants. Just saying, this thing is fantastic and those dealer's, house's, etc. not working with this site may seriously need to reconsider. I'm impressed...from a buyer's perspective, it is a wonderful one stop shop setup. Just my 2.5 cents (adjusted for inflation).
  13. I know no one really in this hobby, I was away from it for 10 years, so I have no choice but to comment on merit alone. If I love it I will say so, always out of respect. Some is just beyond words, so I don't want to cheapen it with mine. Some art just screams for comments...I saw an obscure comment left on a movie poster on CAF that had the owner flummoxxed and was able to explain that the porno poster he shared contained the name of an actress who had played on Dr. Who in the early 80's, hence the Tardis reference in the comment...my geekflag flew high when he thanked me profusely....I love a lot and over comment possibly, but no one ever seems to be sensitive or the like.
  14. Thanks for posting this...some good information in the piece. I am glad someone is fighting the forgery market, seems that goes on a lot here on these boards (thankfully and sadly). On a similar questioning line...I'm a board newbie, so sorry if not appropriate here... Are there any laws about taking an artist's original work...and say making it into a print, matting it...and then selling them by the ton on ebay... without paying artists or the companies? Not sure if the individual I see doing this is doling out payments to companies and artists or not...but they won't answer my question personally. Just seems really funny / shady to me. All for only $24.99 per...?
  15. The honest truth this is always a case by case basis. Certainly, there is a correct mathematical formula for all sales, all time, etc...and that is certainly skewed by supply/demand. In my absence from the hobby, variant covers have gone all '1990's' again and are further equating the modern splash/cover in price. But, when you look at any cover or any splash...the bottom line is....how much would YOU pay for this singular image? How much do YOU love it? You know, the reality of 'how many more bank jobs do I have to pull off for this one?" thing...just my 2 pennies. Oh, I have learned...wish these boards were around in the 80's.
  16. I haven't watched the video, but I'll go with everyone's assumptions of it LOL... this begs a similar or at least parallel question. The cost of original art based on style versus skill... Love certain guys 'style' but would rarely pay the same as I would for 'skill' These things are usually very evident in the fine art world, less so in our beloved medium...but those artist's easily assigned to one or the other category (style/skill) in comics are what I speak of. I am also speaking of same era/same historical significance, etc. for the comparison.
  17. I am always so afraid to use mats with any 'texturing' or effects...this looks awesome though and complements the background the artist used. It also pulls that light red Cobra out, because you could get lost and miss that she's a baddie...LOL
  18. I would automatically think splash due to the top 1/3 being so art crammed...but...with the digital stuff nowadays, I wouldn't be able to know...age shows up in the funniest of ways.
  19. Never thought I'd say these words ... those Raymond rose's look awesome. The middle panel screams talent top to bottom! Great stuff. Just awesome. btw... Nous Resterons La
  20. Older splashes are a lot less common, period. New splashes are drawn entirely too often due to THIS market in and of itself (imho). Image certainly upped the splashy page count, making more per book available, and the artists pay higher I assume in the long run due to the increased value attributed to the splashes. How many covers/splashes/interior pages were produced for ALL comics in say June 1974 as opposed to say June 1994 ... a fraction I am certain. This coupled with multiple modern splashes per issue as opposed to maybe one or two in older books. Just seems obvious due to supply and demand to me. The cover 'variants' are still covers, and if one is by Bianchi/Ross and the other is by 'x' then there isn't really a question as to a formula. Add that to some items being lost over time, destroyed, etc....and the new splashes seems like it should carry a smaller multiple certainly. How much? Hmmmm...math time...
  21. I again, genuinely believe ebay should eliminate every single item not hand drawn/painted/sculpted/McKean'ed whatever from a comic original art category. Key word being original, I'm even okay with remarked stuff....but... All copies, stats, prints, posters, plates, etc shouldn't even be allowed in the door. You guys have scared me a bit with all these fakes, making me just flee ebay anyway and looking for real, reputable dealers and collectors on boards here and CAF....fake of a fake just wow...
  22. Obvious as can be, sad and I believe the category should be a disqualifier in and of itself. If it's in the original art category....ebay should start requiring that, plain and simple. Original.
  23. Obviously, same hand, same everything, falsehoods abound. Flee. Maybe report, but personally flee.
  24. This has happened to me recently. I genuinely wanted to bid/buy the Bianchi variant to X-men 513...listed at 2,750...on ebay...7 day auction. Took 6 days to convince my wife it'd look great on the wall for that price or a bit more....and poof...removed. I asked and he stated that no bids means no interest to a seller looking for an auction sale. ...Next time seen...on a major dealers site at 1,100 more, only 2 weeks later. Sellers panic over inactivity and will sell to the first real interested buyer with a payment offer. They often move them off ebay to save all fees and sell directly via other websites. Nothing 'wrong' on anyone's part, sucks for colletors though. I ended up learning from this and did the exact same thing with another cover and another seller entirely. I simply contacted, said x, they said ok, I paid, I got what I wanted. PULL THE TRIGGER is the lesson imho...and just learn that this is a rapid moving market it seems....10 year break and I'm just blown away
