Canadian Price Variants

414 posts in this topic

I thought this to be a cool one. It is one of the last Archie Giant Series copies before the price increase. The regular editions are marked with 25¢, while the Canadian Price Variants (Type 1a) are marked with a reverse price correction (Type 1b) of "35¢ now 25¢"

Another cool Canadian Price Variant (Type 1a) is Charlton's Fightin' Army #169, which used a US cover overprint with a 75¢ price (you can still see the faded, light purple 60¢ price beneath the 75¢ price)

And the regular 60¢ copy:

Yes 10% of the total print run (direct and newsstand) went to Canada. Only 5 % were Canadian newsstand, and half were destroyed or not bought, and only 10% of the remaider are in Very Fine or better. But something tells me you know this, lol

I agree. Looks like the store was shipped a few Canadians by mistake. Bookstore probably re-priced them in line with the rest of the US copies.

My LCS was shipped some Australian price version of a Hulk comic in the 90's. I need to look to see if I bought one. I think it was when Sullivan (sp?) was printing comics for Marvel.

IMO they, like UK editions, are not variants. They were NEVER distributed in all market areas. If Canadian editions had been distributed in the US and UK they could be considered variants they weren't so they are not. If you are going to call them variants then EVERYTHING in that time period and with any cover variation at all should be considered variants. I doubt that Americans consider their newsstand copies to be variants even though many to all of them had different markings than the direct versions.

What I would market would be the theoretical scarcity of such editions because they were a very small portion of the print run. Even given that I would not pay more for them. I could dig up plenty of Canadian newsstand copies in one day and I guarantee you I would not pay any more or less than a direct or American newsstand copy.

I do. thumbsup.gif

Variant is defined in the dictionary as "manifesting variety" or "varying usually slightly from the standard form". For me, the domestic (US) form is the standard form. A Turkish comic would not vary slightly. It would vary drastically.

Of course I realize that comic book collectors ignore the dictionary. A comic in lousy condition is called "good".

DC Canadian price variants were 95 cent.

The 75 cent DC cover price is the regular US newsstand edition printed with only one price. DC's direct editions had both 75/95 cent on the cover.

Actually, I'm confusing myself now. I better go check.

I noticed you changed the last line of your response, as I wasn't sure myself what you were interpreting from the post that was confusing.

I quickly skimmed the list Wall-Crawler provided, and there definitely should be a CPV Flash 318. I don't have issue 318 as an example to illustrate, but the versions for 323 would bear the same price differences.

There are at least four different versions - the only one I didn't include below is the UK variant:

Ok, so are the things I referenced Canadian price editions/variants?

Anyway, this is the Flash #318 I have...

Yes, they are Canadian price editions. I forgot about the " All New" Canadian indices variant with the 75 cent price on the cover. I actually referenced a Captain Carrot book in my collection. Captain Carrot, how embarrassing to say I have it.

...I have found a few Captain Carrots in mine too...

Cool, guess I got me some more 'variants' and more stuff to look out for. So, to clarify, all DC Canadian/price variants say "Canadian" at the bottom of the price then?

Sorry, I will got back and re-read the thread again if this has already been answered...

Not all DC Canadians say "Canadian". There is the single price, 95 cent Canadian Editions, and they are very uncommon in high grade and an estimated 1/10th of the entire print run for a particular issue. Very tough to find in VF + or better.
