Tales from the Crypt TV show/comic reference guide.

24 posts in this topic

I've just recently finished watching the HBO Tales from the Crypt TV show and I really enjoyed doing so. I remember many of the episodes from when it first ran and several of them gave me the creeps just as much now as when they first aired. The show ran for 7 seasons on HBO before they finally pulled the plug.

There were 93 episodes and all but two of them actually came from EC comics! What I've done below is created a season by season reference as to which episode came from which comic. You'll notice as you go through this that since all of the comics contained several stories sometimes more than one TV episode was culled from the same book.

I'll also provide links to the IMDB season list and the individual comics on the Comic Book Database.

Ok, here we go. Season 1

Episode 1 "The Man Who Was Death"

The Crypt of Terror #17

Episode 2 "And All Through the House"

The Vault of Horror #35

This is actually the famous "coffin under the Christmas tree" book. Definitely one of the creepier episodes.

Episode 3 "Dig That Cat... He's Real Gone"

The Haunt of Fear #21

Episode 4 "Only Sin Deep"

The Haunt of Fear #24

Episode 5 "Lover Come Hack to Me"

This is by far one of my favorite episodes. One of the few that Robert Zemeckis directed starring Kirk Douglas and his son Eric Douglas who later commited suicide. Sadly the relationship between father and son in this episode was said to have mirrored real life.

Episode 13 "The Third Pig"

Last and final episode and is the second of two original episodes written for the series. Also to note, this episode is animated!

Here is the link to the IMDB episode by season list.

I've collected this data from various sources including horror magazines, comics, tv.com, comicbookdb.com and wikipedia among others. In every source I found errors in their data and I believe this to be the most accurate comprehensive list for which comics the episodes of the series originated.

If any of you find any errors please let me know and I will update the list.

Hope you enjoy and thanks for looking!

That's one of my favorite EC stories. I'd love to see what the show did with it...

As an added bonus to my list above I'm including the comics which lend their stories to the original Tales From the Crypt movie from 1972.

The movie was an anthology of sorts with several stories intertwined together forming the centered plot.

This is a link to the film on IMDB

Here are the comics that formed the movie:

The Haunt of Fear #12

The Haunt of Fear #22

Tales From the Crypt #23

Tales From the Crypt #46

The Vault of Horror #35

It should be noted that some of these stories were also re-done for the HBO series most notably the story out of VOH #35 which is the same Christmas story as the second episode from the first season of the series. The movie version of this story featured a much younger Joan Collins then what most of us remember from Dynasty.

Until next time boys and ghouls!

Enjoy

Nice work - I also put a list together a couple of years ago but was too selfish to share lol. Carrion Death, Three's a Crowd and Yellow are three of my favourites for sure! Showdown was up there too.

Awesome work. You know, as much of an EC fanatic as I am, I haven't seen this show but for the first few episodes from the first season. You have inspired me to track down many more.

The first two seasons can be bought as a combo pack from Target for about $15

the first season features a great documentary with Feldstien, Jerry Weist and others.

With those extras it's about time I bought the boxset.

Anyone else into horror Anthologies like this?? Showtime has a good show called Masters of Horror. I have a cool collection of bootlegs and in it I have an unlreleased 13th episode that was a little too brutal to show on cable.

If I remember correctly this book lists episodes and the comics they are based on. Couldn't get a copy of the cover so, heres a link to an Amazon listing.

http://www.amazon.com/Tales-Crypt-Official-Including-Television/dp/0312170408/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

It does have the cross-references and is actually quite a good overview of the comics and the shows.

Good to know. Wish I had known before I put this list together and typed it all out! :tonofbricks:

Ah well, at least I got to share something
