Paypal charging for refunds in August

27 posts in this topic

Online merchants will pay more in fees to PayPal beginning in August thanks to changes the company is announcing today. Beginning August 10, when a U.S. or Canadian seller issues a refund, PayPal will retain the 30-cent transaction fee it charges, a move sure to be highly controversial.

PayPal charges merchants a 30-cent transaction fee plus a percentage of the amount of the transaction, typically 2.9%. PayPal had always credited merchants for 100 percent of the fees for transactions in which the merchant refunded the buyer, meaning that the new policy is, in effect, a price hike.

The change will have a major impact on eBay sellers since the marketplace is increasingly pressuring sellers to accept refunds due to its Buyer Protection policy. Since sellers often complain of being victimized by abusive buyers who advantage of eBay's protection policy, something CEO John Donahoe has talked a lot about lately, many eBay sellers are likely to feel this new policy change by Paypal is adding insult to injury.

PayPal is also hiking the fees charged to merchants by chargebacks. Beginning August 24, eBay will double chargeback fees from $10 to $20 (U.S. merchants only, eBay merchants enrolled in the PayPal Preferred program are exempt).

And on July 13, PayPal and American Express will enter into a new card processing arrangement that requires merchants to establish a direct contractual relationship with American Express - this only applies to taking American Express credit cards directly.*

A PayPal spokesperson told AuctionBytes, "It has been more than a decade since PayPal has made a broad increase. Our focus remains to offer competitive services within a simple fee structure - no hidden fees - (gateway fees, monthly statement fees, web access fees, address verification fees, downgrade fees, etc)."

* Edited to Add: The American Express arrangement concerns only Website Payments Pro and Virtual Terminal merchants. eBay transactions will continue to pay current PayPal prices for AmEx.

Do they really think people are that stupid? That they'll buy this "we haven't raised prices in a decade" bullsheist? THEY CHARGE A PERCENTAGE. THEY DO NOT CHARGE A FLAT FEE THAT GETS LEFT BEHIND BY INFLATION. WHEN PRICES GO UP, THEIR PORTION OF THOSE PRICES GOES UP TOO. EFFING JERKS.

This stuff really just boils my blood.

Right there with ya. Between the new ebay and paypal fees a chunk has been firmly removed from my arse. Just my ebay bill this month was over $1000, not counting the paypal fees.

It hasn't been a decade since they forced me to get a business account and start taking money from me every time I sell something. If I remember correctly they used to only take money when you withdrew Paypal funds, so if you bought something off eBay with your Paypal money it wouldn't cost you anything in fees.

Ebay shares are at $21.87 at the moment.

They have been at $60 in 2005

They have been at $10(ish) but lowest in the last 52 weeks was $15.91

Highest the last 52 weeks was $27.56

Like it or not, Ebay is a strong candidate for moving upwards (I am no pro so don't go buying them now because I said this. If you still do don't blame me afterwards  )

In the long run I see this go up to maybe even $40 again. I said the long run as it might retract a little more before going there.

I don't own any at this time but might put them on my want list. I do own other shares.

What will be the new policy on partial refunds? They keep the fixed fee portion on those anyway, and just adjust the fee portion made on the amount of the payment. Hopefully that will stay the same.

I don't see a big deal with keeping the $0.30 charge. PayPal was used and they have costs.

(But in general eBay and PayPal are evil)

They charge people over and over for the same money that never leaves their system. They are getting paid to move the same numbers over and over and over.

Isn't that their stated function? To facilitate payments between entities? You pretty much stated their business model.

We sure as hell need an alternative to ebay...................guess it will never happen :frustrated:

There will never be one and if one did start up and it would be worst than Ebay, you got to think they would have the same growing pains as Ebay.

There are actually quite a few alternatives out there, especially if you're looking at just comics. Maybe only eBid has the true auction format, but there are other peer-to-peer comic selling sites.

The trouble is nobody wants to try them as they don't reach anywhere near the audience eBay does. Don't get me wrong, I'm no fan of the way eBay/Paypal put their hands in your pocket and just take money, consistently moving the goalposts when they feel like it. But the basic fact is that although a hell of a lot people are happy to moan about eBay being the monopoly that it is, none of these people will try anywhere else. It's a vicious circle, but there ya go.

hm

Maybe start online petitions and leave messages that we are all calling our representatives and senators with a request that a company that functions like a banking concern be evaluated ny appropriate regulatory bodies for such status. They get to put the screws to everybody in the country and rack up the fees. The downside to them is perhaps that many people that could make their business difficult will all get complaints :wishluck:
