Popular Post sagii
On 4/11/2019 at 9:02 PM, sacentaur said: Fox Romance books present an interesting dilemma in that their covers often aren’t very good, the stories can be clumsily written, not to mention interior artwork that usually seems mediocre at best. And because their rebound (4 comics) ‘fatties’ may contain issues where the first page of each story is missing (having appeared inside the front cover of the original edition), it’s been difficult for me to reconcile the collectability of these books. Yet Fox Romance seems scarce and can command some pretty high prices in comparison to other generic romance. They have an oddball appeal that can be tough to resist. So where would you place Fox in the Romance hierarchy (St. John/Baker, Atlas, DC, Superior, L. B. Cole, Harvey, Ace, etc.)? St. John (thank you Matt Baker) certainly would be to Romance what Atlas is to Horror. Placing all the other publishers in a tier type list is still challenging at this point as the Romance collector genre is still sorting out the classic cover/stories books. There are a lot of key stand out books for sure across publishers but not sure beyond St. John, DC and Atlas if any other publishers Romance output is figured out to be 'the' house that did it best. But to try and give some idea to where it could be headed: ACG is getting a lot of second looks. Ace's painted covers are on the radar, the smaller guys like Master/Story, Superior and Comic Media seemed to have the 'goods' between the covers in terms of the salacious. Harvey seem to be the overlooked/underappreciated step child And as far as photo covers go , Fawcett and Quality did it best but from opposite ends of the spectrum: Fawcett for purity, innocence, and ideal romantic fantasies. Quality for the 'implied' come hither girl. No one did that better imho. szucchini, PeterPark, sacentaur and 2 others 3
sacentaur
Excellent post - and you are right about ACG, Quality, and Fawcett, even some Ziff-Davis is getting my attention. Baker/St. John romance is the rising tide that is lifting all boats. Edited April 13, 2019 by sacentaur comicnoir and sagii 1
Popular Post sagii
..one of my favorite Quality Comics 'come hither girl' photo covers featuring actress Janet Leigh of 'Psycho' fame (also Jamie Lee Curtis' mom). Ironic both mom and daughter's signature roles are both Horror films. szucchini, Point Five, Yorick and 3 others

sagii
@pmpknface I think Comiclink just sold one in their last auction (don't know how much it bought). It and #4 are the toughest of the 4 issue run. The series was one of the earlier romance runs on the radar (due to the series name(title), the nicely designed logo, pretty women gracing the cover and 'rumored' scarcity. Issue one is considered a classic cover by Overstreet.

I found the listing, it was a CGC 5.5 that went for $300, and according to the listing is 1 of 2 graded - so you have the highest graded copy! Congrats! The more I play around on the boards the more I find stuff I want. I've started a list. I'm mainly an LB Cole cover guy, but there are so few I need and with the prices of his stuff going through the roof I need other books to hunt down. Maybe a pulp here and there (they are really peaking my interest) or some cool GGA covers. I also like the trashy digest pulps from the 40's - 60's, which I just snagged one of for $6. My prior last pickup was a REAL LOVE #3, love a smokin' redhead! Oh, I'm also a big Hitchcock fan, so that's really why this book appeals to me. I'm sitting in a room at home with 4 framed HItch flick posters on the wall.

Real Love #3 is really cool, as are most of the Ace romance books (as many are finding out). Happy Hunting! ...I am trying my hardest to not go down the Pulp road

If you haven't seen Rebecca (his only best picture Oscar winner) it's great, and Rope is awesome. Short flick, it's shot like a play all taken in I believe 3 shots and all on 1 stage like setting. I know this is a romance thread, but hey! These movies have romance! Just often with a bit a murder mixed in.... Now, back to our regularly scheduled program... sagii

Dr. Love
Dotty #39 raw VF on Ebay $383 not quite teen, not quite romance, certainly not too shabby a result https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dotty-Comics-39-1949-GLAMOROUS-ROMANCE-VF-/143207751721?_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l10137&nordt=true&rt=nc&orig_cvip=true Edited April 22, 2019 by Dr. Love FoggyNelson
Dr. Love
Dotty is a red hot six issue title. Basically a Hartley vehicle, starts to transition from teen into romance with #39 and completes with #41 into Glamorous Romances with Kirkpatrick on the cover art. #40 is my fave, a stunner. Not attributed to Kirkpatrick and I would agree. Edited April 22, 2019 by Dr. Love pmpknface, FoggyNelson, gunsmokin and 1 other
