McFarlane Spawn Homage Covers

21 posts in this topic

Hi everyone, I'm on a mad quest to put together a full collection of the recent homage covers McFarlane did for Spawn (sketch variants) to CGC SS.

#231 homages the 1990 Spider-Man #1, and it is the last one which homages a cover I recognize.

My question is: Did the homage covers stop at #231? Or did they extend beyond and I simply do not recognize what he might have been homaging at #232 forward.

Thanks in advance for anyone with more knowledge than I!

I think lightening struck with the sketch variants for a number of reasons. They're super rare, as noted by an above poster, because of Spawn's low sales.

But lapsed Spawn fans and readers who had never given Spawn a second look alike took notice of Todd's homage covers. People absolutely love them.

The mind reels at what 9.8 CGC SS editions of all these sketch variants could bring. I have all the sketch variants, but I know at least 3 of 'em ain't coming close to 9.8. Luckily, my Action Comics and Walking Dead sketch covers look flawless.

Time will tell when McFarlane is ready to do a signing and I submit them to the CGC.

Oh, and despite Spawn's low sales, Todd still maintains a rabid fan base. Todd's work for the big two has maintained high popularity because people just love his art. Well, for ASM, the intro of Venom surely didn't hurt. Ha.

I think if Todd illustrated the interiors the sales would not be as poor. Alas, that will likely never happen again.

Speaking of Spawn #1 B&W.

I was working for Greg Buls in Mesa in the summer of 1999. He had a bunch of these, because he was trading them directly to Todd's company for them. He would get 25 or so at a time.

$10 each.

I bought maybe 3, sold them on eBay for $25 each.

Happy hunting!

PS - the 225s and the 228 sketch were the most difficult to track down. Good luck. It won't be easy (or cheap) to grab them all.

*Spawn 222 also had a "Kudranski" variant, but it was a super limited run and wasn't officially part of McFarlane's homage run.

Offhand does anyone happen to know the print run on the #226 sketch variant (Hulk 340 swipe)?

thanx

16,814 preorders for the regular cover reported by Diamond Comic Distributors (117th place). This issue was sold the same month as Spawn #227.

The sketch edition was a 1:25 dealer incentive. So roughly 675 to 700 copies were probably sold.

I wouldn't expect there to be over 1,000 copies at the very, very most.

My numbers are from comicchron.com.
