A lot of Boardies have read this story from the general discussion thread, but here's a brief recap:

 

One of my students came to visit me last week and she's facing some tough circumstances. Her husband left her when he got another woman pregnant. He left the house and mortgage with her but is not helping her financially. She's working two just-above-minimum wage jobs for 50 hours a week. Her ex-husband just bought a brand new 2014 truck and the truck she drives is 10+ years old truck and the A/C is broken (and it's hot down south). Her mom was evicted and moved in with her, bringing her other daughter, neither of which are helping financially either. She's a month behind on her bills and worried about losing the house. Also, she lost her insurance when her husband dropped her and hasn't been able to get any coverage since.

 

You couldn't make it up if it was a sad country song.

 

So, there she was, crying in my office and I felt terrible. After she left I reached for my wallet and had zero cash to give her. A few days past and I couldn't escape thinking about this story and think that I could do something to help her. There's a lot of people who expect a handout and are doing nothing to help themselves. I believe this person is doing everything she can to make, but has just been dealt some bad luck.

 

So, that brings me here. My original idea was to post a "Simple Act of Kindness Charity Thread" asking for Boardies to contribute at least $10 in merchandise to the cause. The pre-thread pledges have already started coming in (much appreciation). $10 is the minimum, but if you have something more you wanted to offer, by all means.

We'll keep a running total of the donations sold and cash raised in the second post on the thread. HarveySwick has volunteered to co-manage this charity thread (thank you sir). Once a payment is received for merchandise, I'll post "payment received by X for X" in the thread and the boardies involved can PM each other to work out shipping details.

 

Once we close the thread we will have a grand total and I will go to Walmart to purchase a card and gift cards in the amount of the total. I'll take pictures of the receipt and everything and post it here (transparency). I'll include an anonymous note on the card from "a few good people thinking about and cheering for you."

 

This is an opportunity to do something small to make a big difference.

THREAD OFFICIALLY CLOSED FOR SALES AND DONATIONS

 

I had to choose a point to bring this to an end and after two day of wonderful contributions we have raised enough money to fund this student for probably 4-6 months worth of groceries.

 

I've been a part of similar campaigns before to help others, but this has been truly remarkable. In my two years of being on the boards I have learned a lot. I came through the school of hard knocks and learned how to grade here, learned from the veteran members how to operate here, and developed a greater appreciation of our hobby. Most importantly, I've learned what a tight knit community this really is. The comic world is a special place with some of the most intelligent, creative, enthusiastic, and kind people I've come across. If you have spent any time here you might think that last sentence is a stretch. And we do have our arguments and dramatic moments. But, we also have moments like this where we came together to do something good. This makes us the heroes we read about. You may think that a stretch also... But a hero does great things for no other reason than for the greater good.

 

So thank you all the heroes of the boards.

 

I will plan to purchase and ship the gift cards on July 3rd. I'll keep you all updated here and as I said in the original post provide a copy of the receipt for transparency.

The issue # 1 back cover near the top staple appears to have a tad of color loss, but the scanner is making it look worse than it is. Still there though... but still oh so nice
