I'm 14 books away from a complete run of #16 (the first of the Bissette/Totleben run, though Totleben also worked on #10)through #64 in 9.8 SS.

I'm missing #40, #42, #51, #52, #58, and #61 from the run entirely, but that's because I haven't been able to hand 9.8 quality copies to Mr. T or the others yet.

So should I pull my copies of #40, #42, #51, #52, #58, and #61? hm

I have them somewhere. The #40 is tough, because the printer roller smeared a great deal of the run on the center of the spine. I don't know when/if Totleben is going to be around next, and I kinda don't want to get just his sig, if I can't get Bissette's and Veitch's as well.

I need:

#42

Did the new format, include a matte cover? hm This copy is much nicer than it scans, albeit the bindery chip in the LLFC. It's a matte finish cover, not a shiny glossy one.

Thanks, but that copy is fairly well overpriced.

What do you want to pay? $10 for a 9.8?

Sure. Who wouldn't? I'd be happy to pay $30 for a 9.8, if I could be relatively certain the book has a fair chance at retaining a 9.8 grade after it gets signed (and, without it being needed to be said, handled properly along the way.)

Here's the cold, hard reality about these books: they have no value, even as a 9.8. The last 9.8 sold over three years ago for $21 + S&H.

So, if I can, in the course of my buying, find copies that I can press and make 9.8s, I'm going to do that, rather than pay $69 for what is, essentially, a dollar book.

95% of my run are books that I bought raw, pressed myself, and then subbed. A couple books were slabbed 9.2s to 9.6s, but only a couple. Yes, I've gotten more 9.6s than I wanted....that's the nature of this beast....but I've gotten my 9.8s as well.

And, if I can pay $1 for the book...which I have, for almost the entire run...I think I paid $5 for my #37 and #21, and $3 for my #20....paid $2 for one of my #28s, I think...and then about $25 for the slab cost, and $15 for the sig fees...that's the route I'm going to go.

A 9.8 #42 simply isn't worth $69. Unfortunate, but true. And, if I can't get people to pay those prices for similar books, I'm certainly not going to pay it, myself.

:D

What's with the orange Swampy in this one??? hm

He was in Space. He turns a few different colours during his cosmic adventure, depending on the vegetation of the planet he was visiting I think.

Yes...."My Blue Heaven" from #56 is an outstanding story.

Actually, the entire run is amazing. Just amazing.

At least until Swamp Thing movie comes around based on the Alan Moore run that is.

The theme with this one was controversial even for its time.

Swamp Thing #40 “The Curse”

The controversy occurred as a direct result of the subject matter and themes it embodied: women, menstruation, the male objectification of women, and female subjugation. Add to this a metaphorical conceit equating women with werewolves and the potential for strong reactions, both positive and negative, are understandable. Yet the creative team are dealing with important issues in themselves, showing that comics can be a medium for this type of work. The resulting controversy should not be viewed as the main aim of this work but rather as a side effect of a well-told and thought-provoking tale.

I'm almost finished with Moore's run, the last last chapter I read was the heady "Loving the Alien." So far, "The Curse" has been the one to stand out the most to me. As I reader I sympathized with Phoebe, from feeling awkward about the supermarket adds, to feeling bad about the history presented at the beginning of the story, then angry with the way he husband treated her. Mostly, the story made me feel sad.

You can see the printer roller mark just to the left of Bissette's initials, on the spine. Very common with this book, hard to get a clean copy (although newsstand copies don't seem to have been affected.)
