Giant Size X-Men #1 for investment?

Hulk #181 over GSX #1 and X-Men #94 any day, every day.

Those three (other than a Marvel Comics #1) were the holy trinity for me growing up. Hulk #181 consistently over the past 20 years has grown at a faster, steadier rate than GSX #1 or X-94, and I don't see that not being the case anytime soon.

Jim

I agree with Jim and support the notion that all X-Men # 94s are worthless and should be sold immediately to me at a maximum of 1/3 GPA :D

Dear lord. All I can think of is someone tripping down those steps and cause so many psychological injuries and broken slabs. The 12 year old me thinks you are my hero. (I'm still pretty impressed - don't tell the 12 year old me)

"The value of IH 181 is at least 70% based on movies. If Wolverine never made it there he would be not be considered a key."

I STRONGLY disagree with this statement.

I think the movie speculation effects the B, C and D list characters way more than someone as popular as Wolverine.

I don't think Wolverine is ever going to be UNpopular. The Hulk either, plus this coupling seems to recur frequently because comon, it's a cool fight.

So I see the long term appeal of IH 181, but Is there a peak for this book, or is there no ceiling? Like in 100 yrs the last few copies will be worth one bajillion dollars!!!!

With free shipping....

If we are in a bubble, can someone give examples of when the last bubble was with these books.

Can we show documentation of sold listing from say 20 years ago to today and see where the rise and fall was before the current "bubble"

I am so curious to see what the last "bubble" was.

I don't think you understand how bubbles work. They aren't a cyclical thing, they are a one time expansion followed by a rapid deflation. Internet stocks didn't inflate and pop before the 1990's bubble. Tulip bulbs didn't inflate and pop before their bubble. House values didn't experience the same inflation and pop before the housing bubble of the mid 2000's.

Agree whole heartedly Reed, but I was just too lazy to quote this part with my phone. I read it earlier and immediately thought this book was a key before Bryan Singer was even born, much less before he started making X-Men movies.

Agree with what you're saying. This is why I personally only have copper's that I've wanted since childhood. Same as buying a sculpture or hot toy... Personal and expensive, not for the investment. As for comics in general, not sure you're going to see long term success with stocking up on East of West #1 but FF #1, JIM83, BB28, IH1, etc will probably and have historically survived deflated markets... Who knows, maybe IH181 will stand the test of time... I'm just amazed at prices compared to other Bluechips with lower print runs, graded copies, etc.

I understand how bubbles work, I can grasp the concept. I may not be smart with my wording, maybe I should ask a different way.

Can anyone provide any data to show when there was a past "rise and fall" of Key books i.e. Hulk 181 and/or GSXM1??

Or has the prices of these books steadily gone up?

Hope I have made some sense. I am new to collecting books.

9.8s of IH 181 are a different kind of beast.

Heck, 9.8s of all of these older keys are.

9.4s down are way more stable.

This is true, but if you look at the data the gains still aren't mind-blowing.

NM copies seem to be a safer investment, but I swear the curves make it seem like the book is barely keeping up with inflation.

How much was a 181 worth in the nineties. Couple hundred bucks at most? Then the movies came and it skyrocketed to what it is today. You will not see a huge increase in value for this book over the long haul like 20 years or so because it doesn't have the stamina.

Cheers, Howard

For a Bronze age book I won't go as low as 2.0 to see the swing. So I did 9.2, 8.0 and 5.0....all show a nice increase for IH 181. However, it's not as steep an increase in a key book as I would like to see. For me, it's the 5 year swing and % of increase
