A first in my comic collecting experience.

Looks like I got ripped off on a commission. Almost a year and nothing but promises, excuses and lies. One more email, then I out the artist. I hope I'm just being impatient, but I don't think so... :(

Lessons learned: Never pay up front, no matter how trustworthy the artist seems. Also, if you don't even get a preliminary sketch after two months ask for your money back. If he says he's got three people ahead of you, say you'll wait till their art is done. :(

It sounds dramatic I know, but this has really soured me on original/commissioned art. I've done three commissions and all of them took longer than expected and cost more than I though/was quoted. Even getting the art from comicartfans isn't much better. Most things on the site listed as for sale aren't and those that are usually have no prices listed. >.<

Sorry, rant over.

It would be good to name the artist so others are aware.

I'm sorry for your experience. I'm currently in the same boat and am giving the artist one last chance before publicly laying out the facts and pursuing legal action.

Personally I'm far more interested in commissions than published art, but all the nonsense surrounding receiving commissions with a level of professionalism attached has definitely slowed down any new deals.

I guess it's a good thing in the sense that it's giving me an opportunity to spend the $ a bit more responsibly.

How long has it been since your initial request to commission the artwork?

Some can be dumb by saying yes even though they fully know they have other commissions as well as deadlines to meet for publishers.

Is it a few months? Two years? Has he at least been responsive?

He said it's been almost a year.

Ha! Missed that part.

Out him and see if there are others who have ordered commissions in the past and have been burned by this same artist.

How awesome (not for the OP though) would it be if he said Michael Golden?

In addition to warning others about an artist/thief, by outing the specific artists you may find that other people have RESOLVED similar issues with those people, and may find out how they have done it, be it through the legal process, or contacting the right people, etc.

What I always HOPE will happen is that a customer gathers all of the proof and documented communications, bring it to the police and have him arrested at a con in front of everyone. I know this is unlikely due to jurisdictions and what not, but it always seemed like it'd be cool (and hopefully teach other scammer artists a lesson).

Good luck. Sharing is caring.
