Artist swipes : examples ?

34 posts in this topic

Hey Group,

Has anybody cool examples of cover swipes ?

It was probably discussed before.

I am not only talking from one artist to another, but I am also talking an artist using the layout of a sports illustrated magazine and such.

Please share if you know of some ..,

Somehow this post takes a very strange turn.....hm..

But all fun aside.

What I also would like to ask if anybody has examples where an artist copies the pose of a model from a magazine for example.

I want to say I remeber that Bill Sienkiewicz has done these.

Copy the pose of a magazine cover girl to use as the pose of for example Elektra...

Greg Land is a notorious swiper, just google "Greg Land photo swipes". He's used Sports Illustrated swimsuit pin ups and even (alleged) stills from porn...

I wonder, is it actually more work to find something to swipe than to just draw something original ?

According to Larry Hama, Wally Wood kept a reminder to himself:

"Never draw anything you can copy,

never copy anything you can trace,

never trace anything you can cut out and paste up."

See Wood's Wikipedia page.

I think the only "original" art was drawn by cavemen. So I'm not surprised that artists will swipe (or copy, whatever word you want to use). I'm surprised that they do it for an almost meaningless panel. As illustrated in the tumblr page...

a figure in an explosion

a figure in a crowd of people

simple poses (someone just standing with a big gun)

On the other hand, if an image was swiped for a significant image (e.g. a lone figure with no backgrounds on a cover), I guess that would be considered an homage, not a swipe.

So, where is the line between a swipe and an homage ?!? Or is there a line ??

Here is the Sienkiewicz swipe in an Elektra commission of a Christy Turlington image by Herb Riits. I already mentioned it but it might have been buried in a post:

Here is a Frazetta swipe of a Filipino artist Francisco V. Coching:

Speaking of Filipinos, here is a Filipino Mico Suayan doing a Miracleman variant cover - that if flipped - looks similar to a pinup by Totleben - although I am not sure if this is a swipe since that probably is a "stock" Miracleman pose - kinda like Superman flying.

The Frazetta one is a not a swipe, sorry.

I had looked it over earlier because it was similar but there are a number of difference including the hair placement, the hand in the hip, the outstretched hand and the one leg appears to be bent on Frazetta's. I feel like this general pose seems to be fairly common.
