If anyone is interested I helped Ben Nobel who runs the Wordpress 'Rare Comics' blog to put together an online issue guide for Marvel and DC pence variants - the results can be found here if you'd like to take a peek:

https://rarecomics.wordpress.com/2018/12/17/pence-price-variant-issue-guide-marvel-dc/

We haven't had any comments yet so do dive in if this is your thing. Ben was a fun chap to work with and loves his variants :)

In the New Year I'll post the conclusion of my early Marvels indicia review which turned out to be much more complex than I first thought (see earlier posts). As is often the case, it threw up a few surprises and some links to my other research interests (Millers, Font Variants etc). I have a few nice pence books to post too.

See you in the New Year :)

This is looking very good indeed(thumbsu

I'm going to have to give it some time on the week-end. The Top 50  doesn't appear to be too surprising, usual suspects, but helpful for the price guide. I'm liking it just from a cursory glance, and I'm sure there's more.

Will there be an inclusion at a later date for the other publishers of pence editions?

Cheers, Steve(thumbsu

Cheers Bob. Ben did all the whizzy stuff - I just provided the raw data, dates etc. He's a cool bloke to work with and very receptive to different views and thoughts. We've had some great debates on a variety of variant related stuff. It's just nice to find people who share your interests and who are prepared to engage civilly really. I'm not sure if we'll add the other publishers. I don't think there is enough interest out there. Marvel and DC will always garner a following, but the others I'm not so sure. Thanks for the kind words :foryou:

Shame about the other publishers, but I can see your reasoning on this. It's good to see a little more detail out there now, fingers crossed it will get some responses. I've bookmarked. (thumbsu

I may as well post this here too - the suggestion was put to me recently that three of the nine known November 1971 double sized pence issues were priced at 6p in error, given that the other issues for that month were priced at 8p. That made sense, as the 8p price better reflects their worth as double sized issues when compared to the ongoing regular sized issues from December priced at 6p (and note that the US versions were 25c for November and 20c for December for all nine comparable issues):

The 6p November 1971 Double Sized Issues:

11.thumb.jpg.fce169950349b189f2ad9d23a1343fda.jpg  116.thumb.jpg.3ce23f981865b98a0170ef988e0a1483.jpg  12.thumb.jpg.7cd0bb21ab1f2df030f061527fc4b2a6.jpg

The 8p November 1971 Double Sized Issues:

102p.thumb.jpg.17e04962696b1be726e75132f0529a62.jpg  93.thumb.jpg.e40f9574d66dba2b46adbd428eac1370.jpg  81.thumb.jpg.355262b60eff41231185a4d97598fe0b.jpg  145.thumb.jpg.00bd84f1d249ecb39747d719ffa960df.jpg  43.jpg.b5fa0944ae662ee8904f5429c073a59a.jpg  193.thumb.jpg.577a57a40dc9bbfede21104bf67bc20d.jpg

Anyone who has purchased an ASM #102 or a Hulk #145 in the UK will probably have experienced the dreaded sticker residue. I had an 8p ASM #102 that had it and noticed a lot of Hulk #145's had it (the example above does, as does the Avengers).

A quick check on eBay shows this:

1378379990_6pStickersindicate8pwasincorrect(notall1971sare8p).PNG.5062620662f3b939fa5f52a2d2763409.PNG

So it looks like the 8p price was actually considered the 'mistake' rather than the more logical 6p, given the number of official looking, consistent corrective 6p stickers out there.

An interesting scrap of pence info, which has been sitting under my nose for years, and which may never be explained.

I just wanted to post a big thank you to @GARYSTAR this morning

In support of the research I'm doing I asked Gary if he would send me scans of the indicia of the Patsy Walker #89 that he posted some time back in the thread. He went one better and sent me the actual comic! What a great gesture, and proof that there are still decent people in the world :)

Gary - you rock! :headbang:

Meanwhile, and this is nothing new, just worth repeating, Amazing Fantasy 15 has a potentially unique indicia scenario.

There are two first printing copies - the pence and cents copies like so:

af15ci.thumb.jpg.eeb401a275612b3a7ba82f57118d5476.jpg af15pi.thumb.jpg.6e1a17d445d2a046521d373aa4e97e81.jpg

The pence copy has an additional line of indicia data - 'SOLE DISTRIBUTORS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM - THORPE & PORTER LTD' - just below the usual cents details.

In keeping with the practice at the time (to eliminate the confusion caused by long shipping times), the pence copy has the cover month removed like so:

af15p.PNG.4eeaa0c90a27a7301ff61ccbcef46160.PNG

And the US copy has the month of August:

af15c.PNG.cec3b65e502f06ccaa6480367e34fe25.PNG

But in what may be the only example of it's kind, both pence and cents indicias list the month as September 1962, not August:

I was looking at this again the other day and noticed that the 'pence' AF15 in the image above has the interior of Marvel Tales #1. I lifted the image from Google, just to show the indicia difference and didn't spot it the first time. Someone was a bit naughty there wasn't they! (tsk)

I was hoping to finally add an AF15 pence copy to the vault the other day. This beauty was up for auction just down the road from me:

af15c.thumb.jpg.a55768cbc11cccdad3faf802465d028c.jpg  af15i.thumb.jpg.48bf5543ad0a54b646c3ea7cec611403.jpg

Auctioneers estimate was £8-£10K. Maybe I could snag it for less?

af15f.thumb.PNG.d1732bd3fd08355c2faa736187c9ea46.PNG

Bidding was fierce!

af15.thumb.PNG.f147b9d3b00f8e86bc51162ea3bbfa8b.PNG

And it ended at £14,500. With a 23% buyers premium, that's just under £18,000

Not strictly a first printing Marvel pence variant of course, but who cares. There's a pence price on it. Haven't seen one of these with the free gift in a long time:

A quick addition to this summary, posted previously:

Capture.PNG.bcc27cd21699eda0b755e16fc791c6d0.PNG

I've added that some of the later 20p issues are missing their cover months - an example below, courtesy of ROM #22:

2094606932_rom21crop.jpg.83773927b7dea86e0fc5b704d5ac5224.jpg  1559280954_rom22datemissingcrop.jpg.7a3d8d2062c7ea526f2fbb662a3e01e0.jpg  rom22uscrop.jpg.4245fa52fd4808b200903b4e02d0d3d3.jpg

There are quite a few like it and I'll list them all another time :)

That's a GREAT looking AF15.  What do you think it grades 5.0?  I think the winner got a great price!

Nice and clean looking isn't it. It was listed as a Fine but I thought nearer 5.0 too, hence the hope of snagging a bargain. Difficult to tell from photos, but I suspect it handled well in the flesh.

I think a press might take that to a 5.5, I'm not sure a 6.0 in in range but who knows.

That whole collection was gorgeous!  What auction house was that?

This one:

They can have some nice stuff listed, but this lot was a step above the norm.

There are a few UK sellers who buy everything up - I often see the lots reappear on ebay, usually for far more than was bid.
