Detached staple : Max grade for a Blue Label ?

Hi,

I'm wondering whether CGC is less forgiving on the issue of detached staple(s) than CBCS.

In your opinion, what maximum grade could a comic book get from CGC if it's a blue label (not a green one) and if it has a detached staple ?

I know a book from CBCS that got an unrestored 7.0 while the grader's notes mention : " front cover detached top staple"

Thanks,

As with most such max grade questions the answer is it depends. There are varying degrees of 'detached'. Detached from front cover but still attached to the back or vice versa. Is it detached with damage, tears ? Was it bindery in origin. This question would be easier to answer if this flaw was mentioned on the label. Personally, I can see a 7.0 with a clean, detached staple. If detached to only one of, front or back, I can see it graded as high as 9.0 .

Thanks a lot for your opinion on that question.

From the grader's notes, I assume the staple is still attached to the back. If it wasn't, I think that would be mentioned.

The label doesn't mention anything. Both staples are right on the spine (they don't show on the front cover nor on the back cover) so it's hard to tell wether this was a bindery in origin or not.

Any opinions from other board members ?

I guess there's no harm in revisiting a five-year old question.  (thumbsu  Let's restrict our discussion to Universal (Blue Label) Grades.  The highest Universal Grade I've ever seen for a cover partially detached (either the front cover only or the back cover only) at a single staple is 8.5 VF+:

And the highest Universal Grade I've ever seen for a cover completely detached at a single staple is 7.5 VF-:

If anyone has seen higher maxima than what I've presented above, I'd welcome you contributing an image to this thread.  :foryou:

And remember, the example below does not count because it represents one of CGC's early (2008) encapsulation errors.  The fact that the label text is all capped is the tell that the book should have been encapsulated with a Green (Qualified Grade) Label.  :pullhair:

Good question.  (thumbsu  Because the cover is still attached at the referenced staple via a front cover tab.  Here's a shot of a book where only the front cover is detached at the staple.  The back cover is still securely attached at this same staple.  Hence, the cover is only partially detached at this staple.  :foryou:
