Red Seal Comics #16 Big Apple pedigree (Chesler, 1946) CGC NM 9.4 White pages. This may look on the surface to be a harmless humor comic, but one story inside was the inspiration for one of the most famous quotes to come from Seduction of the Innocent, that infamous book by Dr. Fredric Wertham responsible for frightening a nation full of teachers, law enforcement offices, and parents about the dangers of comic books. According to Overstreet, SOTI features an illustration on page 181 taken from this issue, with the added caption "Outside the forbidden pages of de Sade, you find draining a girl's blood only in children's comics." Whew -- pretty strong stuff! This "forbidden" comic is one of only two currently graded by CGC, and by far the better copy, with the runner-up managing a mere 3.5.

So maybe subtle from a visual standpoint but probably a bit more if you think about the action in a very early kids comics from a much more innocent era...

If Wertham had solely focused on calling out against racial stereotypes in comics, going along with him helping black children, then I’m sure many including comic lovers would have listened to him more. Instead, he ended up overreacting, even perhaps beyond any general opposition to racial stereotyping in the first place, and seemed to be quite willing to resort to using mental gymnastics in twisting the words of comics around, falsifying evidence, going along with the hysteria of gay people being pedos, and not paying much of any attention to companies like Interfaith and EC going against racism just as he himself was, with lunatic Murphy’s reaction to Judgment Day being an example if nothing else that racist views, scapegoating, and misunderstandings leading to malicious behavior against black people was very much a problem to be rightfully concerned about.
