Exclusive: Tim Miller Developing Solo ‘Kitty Pryde’ Movie at Fox

Sources have confirmed to us that Tim Miller of Deadpool fame is hard at work developing a solo movie for the famous phasing member of the X-Men, Kitty Pryde, to potentially direct. Best known by the codename Shadowcat, but also taking on the aliases of Ariel, Sprite and even the mantle of Star-Lord over the years, Pryde is a mutant with the ability to “phase” or become intangible, which basically allows her (and anything she’s touching) to pass through solid objects, disrupt electromagnetic fields, and even levitate. Miller’s setting the project up at 20th Century Fox, the current home of Marvel’s X-Men, X-Force, Wolverine, The New Mutants, and the aforementioned Deadpool titles, but the much-publicized potential buyout by Disney will almost certainly complicate things.

To be clear, a Kitty Pryde movie is very much in development at Fox by Miller at the moment, but even without the expected merger valued at $52.4 billion, a movie that’s in development doesn’t necessarily end up going into production. Just look at the list of “announced” projects for super-producers like Steven Spielberg or Ridley Scott–who just added a possible Disney project of his own–to get an idea of how many pictures are in development versus how many come to pass. Factor in that Miller himself is currently producing a Sonic the Hedgehog movie for Paramount and will be directing the new Terminator film for the studio for a 2019 release, and then add in the fact that the regulatory review of the Disney/Fox merger should take anywhere from 12 to 18 months (if it is approved at all) and things get a bit more complicated.

If Kitty Pryde does come to pass, it will be the first time the Marvel mutant gets her own big-screen title and would follow sometime after Simon Kinberg‘s upcoming film X-Men: Dark Phoenix. Not a bad pair of films to celebrate Fox’s first female leads for a Marvel title since the beleaguered Elektra.

And as for Miller’s involvement, he did quite well for himself (and the studio) with his budget-conscious and hyper-focused take on Deadpool, a solo antihero film with a killer star in Ryan Reynolds and a solid supporting cast around him. Will lightning strike twice?

'Deadpool' Director and Brian Michael Bendis Working on Mystery X-Men Movie

Quote

A new report from Deadline reveals 20th Century Fox has hired longtime Marvel Comics scribe (and recent DC convert) Brian Michael Bendis to write a -script for Deadpool director Tim Miller. Though little is known about the project at this point, it does have a working title: 143.

Uncanny X-Men #143 was a Christmas-set horror comic with Kitty Pryde in the X-Mansion when a demon named N'Garai attacked. The comic was created by Chris Claremont and John Byrne in their acclaimed run.

While it would work as a holiday-themed horror project that could work with a low budget, it seems unlikely given the somewhat experimental release of The New Mutants is still on the docket. But it's still a possibility, especially with rumors of a Kitty Pryde movie being in development at the studio.

X-Men Mystery Project Reportedly Kitty Pryde Movie

Quote

The X-Men project from Deadpool director Tim Miller and writer Brian Michael Bendis will indeed feature Kitty Pryde, as confirmed by the Hollywood Reporter.

This confirmation comes after a rumor last month that Miller was working on developing a film featuring the phase-shifting mutant for Fox. The studio is still working in "business as usual" mode as the looming deal with Disney goes through regulation.

The original report revealed the X-Men project was operating under the working title "143." It's quite possible that number refers to a certain issue in the comic books in which Kitty Pryde features prominently.

In Uncanny X-Men #143, Kitty Pryde is left alone at the X-Mansion during Christmas Eve when a demon entity known as N'Garai attacks. The demon looks like a cross between a Brood creature and the xenomorph from Alien, which is fitting considering the comic plays out a lot like the movie when Ripley becomes the sole survivor.

Kitty even eliminates the threat in a similar fashion as Ripley, torching the N'Garai demon with the turbines of the X-Jet. It all plays out like a mid-budget horror film, which could be exactly what Miller and Bendis will be going for with their film.
