This cover is horrible, and anyone who says otherwise is a liar!

Right, it's garbage, but once you get it sorted out, you realize....

Bingo. It's a real smorgasbord of shame.

Well, this Diptych of Disgrace by Travis Charest should immediately ruin your day....

If you can somehow get past quadzilla's phat azz, ask yourself, self, why does Batman look like he keeps getting hit in the face with a sack of lemons?

Travis Charest? Is that a real name? Travesty Charest more like!

For me, when I think of horrible covers I always ALWAYS think of this abomination.   I just look at this and just think “Wow, this guy really gets what Spider-Man is all about”

Now look, I like this next cover.

But for all the wrong reasons:

I like that everyone appears to be living in a model village:

5a5e32a6136d8_39(2).jpg.ce65caf256cf360ddbdebcba72d071ea.jpg

...and that no one knows where to look. Not sure how these two can see much given where they're standing:

I'm not even going to mention the gorilla, or speculate on his motivations.

But look, this must be the Kid's final defeat because, look, he's lost his hat and everything:

And what's with the weirdy eye?:

Oh, sorry. Wrong book.

I do like it though :)

Carter! That's my name!

Steve, you’re clearly not as much of a John Byrne fan as I am, so what’s your assessment of this classic cover?

Interesting use of empty space, or phoned-in laziness?

Seriously Paul, the 'SNOWBLIND' wording kills it for me. Apart from totally overpowering the image, it's like it's trying to justify what's going on, i.e. 'it's a snow story everyone, that's why it's an all white cover'. The picture tells the story, the wording isn't necessary. Also, the actual art is so 'flimsy' looking to me. If it was superbly detailed it might work. But it looks like a 25 second sketch. The hair - terrible! The neck - borrowed from a giraffe! The arm - where's the top half of it? Is her forearm growing out of her chest or something? For such a small effort, surely you would want the art to be of the very highest standard. And anatomically reasonable too.

Sorry Paul - I think it's horrible. I get what he was going for, but the execution is poor. I find Byrne to be such a lazy artist. In the right hands, small strokes, well placed, can make a great image. Here, small strokes are just that - small strokes that create an unsatisfactory whole. I've yet to see the work that makes me appreciate why others laud him.

So, horrible. In that sense, given the thread title, thanks for posting it! :)

Just now, Marwood & I said:

In fact, even our cover star is symbolically running away from her own creator!

And assuming she's running forward, with forward momentum, why is her hair and cloak in front of her, not behind her? Is she in a hurricane? Or is it the blow back from the massive art fart that the Byrne name has created?

Apart from all that, it aint bad.

:roflmao:

@Ken Aldred

Here's a good comparison Paul. Spidey looks believable here - I can feel he's freezing. I can feel the desolation. He's really well drawn and looks 'right'. The artist is confident enough not to have a big distracting signature in play.

What do you think? Who has displayed the greater talent / artistic flair here? Who's picture tells the story most completely? If you take all the titles and barcodes away, which image would look best framed on your wall? If you tried to replicate them yourself, which do you think you would find easier to match?

I agree. 556 is better, same reasoning as you.

I was never a fan of Alpha Flight.

Nowhere near as good as Byrne’s FF run.

I know it's against the thread's intentions, but show me a great Byrne FF would ya Paul?

Yeah, those feet are all jacked up. That's one heck of a strong pinkie toe she's rocking on the left foot.

Then again, I have no drawing skill whatsoever. (shrug)

Arguably, nor does the 'artist'!
