Did your friend tell you how or why someone graded that CGC 1.5 Texas Ranger comic🤔🤔

It was a mistake. He sent in an AF15 9.4 and they sent him this back instead. Mistakes do happen I suppose.

I'll go right with that. I have found the mere mention of this thread  elsewhere on the board to be a complete conversation stopper.  I am suspicious that the entombed graphic novel was in fact a valuation, not a rating. It is esteemed and valued at one shilling five pence. It's easy to make this mistake.  I suspect that any graphic novel library  that cannot account for  remnant existence of  about 1/4 of its known editions should get into something easier, like first editions of Pascal's Pensees which were profusely illustrated. Hard to find though. Moms everywhere burned them as they found them.

You're right Fog, it was wrong of me to call this thread a whole heap of horse sh:censored: as horse sh:censored: can serve a useful purpose. Yes, on reflection, dog sh:censored: would have been a more accurate description.

well, I have both here and the horses produce 50 lbs a day per horse and can kill you as an added benefit even when they're trying to be nice. .  Try to get that from your sheltie!. Dog mess is far more appropriate. I have way less and could never be accused of having a serious collection.  I still have yet to see an actual issue of theses Charleton books.

Always look in the bottom of the barrel! I fear we have ruined the obscure nature of the value of the beast. All those pre med students in school won't chuck their copies now.

Bumping the awesomest of awesome threads.

Thanks Jim!

A nice sunny morning of Charlton pottery is in course :)

I'm up to 385 of the 448 confirmed of the 833 possible so far:

ch.thumb.jpg.90dbfc317e0f0be4ddf87326258be488.jpg

So uncommon are these books that terrible condition often goes with the territory. I don't mind really, as it sort of suits the mood. My quest is less about value / condition, and more about preserving (informing?) the knowledge of what exists for all those Charlton fans in the future. Yes, them two. But it is nice once in a while to get a bright, clean copy - here's Space War #17 from July 1962:

1857852058_SpaceWar17(Vol.1)July1962(9d).thumb.jpg.302aeda0b3b13fa9d1c52b6544d0524a.jpg

That's a great cover isn't it. Something about the colouring with a u and the lack of wordage that makes it striking.

Now Freddy here isn't in technically bad shape, but the cover stamp could have been kinder :whatthe:

I may have to take it back to the Book Centre - they have branches all over London you know - to get my 3d exchange

Here, have a look at this:

1304750978_Monsters3(ReprintsHorrorMonstersPresentsBlackZoo1).thumb.jpg.c67c5572eeaa5c2e853c6b2aec5b8a31.jpg

Handsome isn't he :insane:

What? What's it doing here? Well, I'll tell you.

Charlton did magazines as well you know and I've been looking to see if there are any pence copies out there. Here's the evidence:

chmag.thumb.jpg.e29febf394208007f81c4f33b90bab36.jpg

Looks promising doesn't it.

The Monsters #3 above appears to be a recovered copy of 'Horror Monsters Presents Black Zoo #1'. Here's the US of A original (note T&P price stamp!):

628834567_HorrorMonsters1US1963.thumb.jpg.1830ebf28aa92bd4957a198e36f0648f.jpg

The interiors are the same so it looks a bit like the DC Thorpe & Porter 'Double Double' Comics, where someone used remaindered US originals and stuck a unique UK cover around them (see my DC Pence thread).

Here's the inside of the Monsters #3 'repackaged' copy:

416338532_chmag2.thumb.jpg.fd9cfd6e399f878e3ac54165ba495c0d.jpg

You can see the original staples showing and that the 'new' cover has been stapled after the event in a different place. Naughty RV!

And yes, it's those 'RV' people again (see earlier posts about 'who are RV'?). At least I think it is.

As well as the above, I've looked into two Charlton Horror Magazine titles:

  • Mad Monsters - which ran for 10 issues in the early 1960's
  • Horror Monsters - which also ran for 10 issues in the early 1960's

Copies of many issues exist with what looks liked hand placed UK price stamps on them. Given that there are only ten issues of each title, the UK price stamps are all over the place with little consistency in format, placement etc. And in some cases, there are different stamps for the same issue. Take Mad Monsters #6:

We have one copy with a straightforward 2/6 price (which looks printed):

871060635_MadMonsters6Fall1963(26)crop.jpg.dceba76531a9044cc57f327e77ca410f.jpg

...and another with the RV Shield stamp (which looks hand applied):

1400226092_MadMonsters6Fall1963(RVSeries326)crop.jpg.29404e9604b98904d7ec213faef689d1.jpg

1727667863_MadMonsters6Fall1963(26).thumb.jpg.a449fe0c25047897438f5c30f95fd679.jpg  1181538662_MadMonsters6Fall1963(RVSeries326).thumb.jpg.cd5b0b1bacb0561e45ac29a241748707.jpg

                                       Printed 2/6 ?                                                   Hand applied RV Shield 2/6 ?

Even though the issue is number 6 in US terms, some of the UK stamped copies say 'New Series No.3' which is odd. I haven't found any meaningful correlation with the other issues on which this 'New Series' numbering exists. It seems completely random.

Here's a few other stamp types:

549161152_MadMonsters31962(26)Copy2crop.jpg.35e272c19be89170be103ba7fecfcaaa.jpg 1834402081_MadMonsters51963(26)crop.jpg.0331c0527a8e26227e3009b0b6f01d87.jpg 926542122_MadMonsters7(RVSeries526)crop.jpg.d49b0405ca3b006f2e18957abc3cc700.jpg 1881650775_MadMonsters8(RVSeries26)crop.jpg.26b8b0098080f2bf6b6bebc8c45d98e5.jpg 531085206_MadMonsters10(NewSeries326)crop.jpg.d88bbada86771d644fcc4062ae56f161.jpg

One or two issues look like the UK price could have been a printed one. But there are many examples where the positioning changes between copies indicating after production application - example here:

1994413512_MadMonsters31962(26)Copy2crop.jpg.4b62f05ff3dc21c38391e26d964deb20.jpg 195655912_MadMonsters31962(26).jpg.6115b97e1b8f2e7550579e69697d69d7.jpg

So it looks like RV - whoever they were - had an arrangement of some sorts to distribute these US books in the UK. Some may be printed with a UK price, but most appear hand stamped. Somebody then snagged four books from the three titles I've mentioned so far and 'recovered' them (the Monsters #3 earlier - there are four known copies of 'Monsters' with unique UK covers, although none appear on the GCD)

Quite interesting in a way. I'll keep digging.

Where's this bloody Charlton monster I've been summoned to appreciate by @Get Marwood & I?  I have the full set Steve however I got those though Howard Rogosky, however that Monsters 3 is a very rare magazine and commands a high price dollar wise. I know that Dez Skinn sold these through his mail order adverts that featured in Halls of horror and House of Hammer magazines, he sells Monster mag poster mags on Ebay and can be reached there. He's a nice guy and I'm sure he could answer your questions, also there is another Charlton magazine called Werewolves and vampires that was a one shot.

Mad monsters had a sister mag called Horror monsters and here's one I just found on Ebay yes I'm too lazy to get my own copy. Notice the U.K stamp on this cover. I've also found a better inside cover for the Mad monster mag that you can enlarge Steve.

Don't forget that Famous monsters of Filmland published two U.K issues and these are more rarer than their U.S counterparts, I've also found some more Mad monsters for you Steve.
