Can you say Knightriders? Martin? The Crazies? Creepshow? Two Evil Eyes? Monkey Shines? The Dark Half?

As the last film my co-author and I are covering in our big zombie movie guide book, ZombieMania, we'll be right there seeing it tonight, and probably at least once more next week.

Cool! Are you going back to the roots with WHITE ZOMBIE (1932), KING OF THE ZOMBIES (1941), I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE (1943), REVENGE OF THE ZOMBIES (1943)?

You WILL lettuce know when the book is out, right? thumbsup2.gif

I can't wait to go to the film...sadly I won't be able to get to the movies till Monday.

As for all this "one trick pony" talk about Romero...puh-leeze. Every zombie film (and most mainstream horror films) for the past 35 years owes its bottom line to Romero. The guy has watched countless shoddy imitators fatten their pockets off his ideas, while he's been forced to sit idle due to lack of big-budget funding. And you're going to fault the guy for making a coda to the most significant series of zombie flicks ever produced? Shame on you guys.

Btw, Arnie I'd love to hear more about this project. In what ways have you and your co-author sought to trump Dendle's Zombie Movie Enclyopedia? I thought that one was a pretty good effort..

Well for one thing that book is really boring. smile.gif

We're going to have in-depth sections on 85 selected films with reviews, trivia, all sort of goodies. It isn't just a dry paragraph on each movie, and hopefully I'll be making it much more visually appealing too. And we'll have the most exhaustive title index ever published - which, thanks to this revival of the genre, will be out of date right away. But that's publishing for ya. If enough people like the book we'll be back to offer ZombieMania 2. smile.gif

If it's going to be the most exhaustive ever published, there won't be a reason for a #2. You just keep releasing slight updates to #1... 893scratchchin-thumb.gif

The index will be the most exhaustive title index, but there's no way we can write up every zombie movie ever with the degree of attention we're going to give the 85 we've selected to focus on, that's why there's plenty of room for a follow-up book with another 85 specific films.

Just wanted to give this thread a bump as my wife and I finally got our keisters to a midnight showing (is there any other way to see a zombie flick?) the other night.

A few quick points first:

1) It's better than Day of the Dead.

2) It's definitely a Romero film (for better and worse).

3) It's the goriest zombie film Romero's ever made. Definitely a fair amount of Fulci/Argento influence here (not to mention Argento's daughter in the film!)

I have a feeling that folks who are not longtime fans of Romero will be confused by the hooplah around this film. The movie goes into no explanations, there's precious little character development (of the living characters, anyhow), and the movie looks like it was made in the late seventies. That's the part I love about it the most, by the way.

Romero has definitely had a fair amount of time to think about zombies since his last film, and here he extends a lot of the concepts that were already introduced in Day of the Dead (i.e. zombies acquiring intelligence over time, learning to use tools, etc.). However, this movie has some new ideas that make for neat food for thought (couldn't resist the pun, sorry). In this (probably) final zombie flick, Romero gives us one big reveal: the zombies deserve to live more than we do. The zombies never attack each other; they're never willfull, selfish, or duplicitious. If the zombies had a government, they'd be socialists. Romero suggests for the first time that the zombies are not some kind of freak aberration or abomination; instead, they're the next step. The zombies are evolution.

Do I recommend this film? Absolutely. WIll everyone love it? I doubt that very much. Some of the typical Romero weaknesses are here...weak dialogue, the occasional plot hole, and a resolution that's a bit too quick and anti-climactic. But the old Romero feel is very much alive (er, undead). This is very much a "working class" horror film, if you know what I mean. Romero lovingly wears that blue collar, and bless him for it!

And man, is this movie gross! Keep your eyes peeled for the semi-decapitated priest. Not an image you're likely to forget!

So thumbs up. It won't be everybody's favorite flick, but it's old school all the way. It sure didn't disappoint at midnight.
