My "All-American Publication Cover Logo" Run is COMPLETE !! 2 2

With my victory in a Sensation Comics #38 auction (ComicLink) a couple weeks ago, I have officially completed a collecting set that I've been working on (in non-aggressive fashion) for almost four years to the day. It's a set that I've never heard of anyone else specifically pursuing - the "All-American Publication Cover Logo" run, which consists of 48 books. 

The idea of collecting this run first came to me when I was researching the starting point for my "EC Completist List." At first it was just a side note, but the more I thought about it, the more this "set" appealed to me. I'll copy/paste a snippet from my EC Completist journal where I first talked about this (I'll forgive you if you don't remember reading my journal  ):

Max Gaines’ first company was All-American Publications, which he founded in 1938. Max got some of his initial funding from Harry Donenfeld, the CEO of both National Allied Publications and DC. One of the conditions of this funding was that Max had to take on Jack Liebowitz (a partner at DC) as his partner at All-American. So, Max entered some sort of complicated, convoluted relationship with DC comics, where they were doing cross-funding and cross-marketing between his company (All-American) and DC. Indeed, for marketing reasons, Max used the DC logo on most of his All-American titles (including all the Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman-related comics in the early 1940s)...although the titles were still owned by Max and All-American Publishing...not by DC.

The story narrative varies slightly across different sources, but basically, around the close of 1944, Max and the National/DC crew had a falling out. So, beginning in February 1945, Max started publishing his All-American titles under the logo of his company, All-American Publications.

Max continued publishing his All-American titles under the All-American logo throughout 1945. However, to complicate matters, it looks like in February 1945 he also started publishing Picture Stories from the Bible under his newly founded Educational Comics header. So, basically, at the beginning of 1945, Max started publishing all of the former All-American/DC titles except Picture Stories of the Bible under All-American Publications, and started publishing Picture Stories of the Bible under Educational Comics. At the end of 1945, Max officially sold all of his All-American titles back to Jack Liebowitz/DC. In December, 1945, all of the former All-American titles (e.g., Sensation Comics, All-Flash) were once again published under the DC logo...DC officially owned them now. So, as of December 1945, Max was free…he continued publishing Picture Stories from the Bible under the logo of his new company, Educational Comics, and he developed the rest of his EC stable of titles.

Yes, that's right...Max wasn't really a fan of super-heroes...so, at the end of 1945 he divested himself of Wonder Woman (among the others), and kept the Picture Stories line, because he thought THAT was where it was AT 

So, I view these books as "EC precursors" - and the historical relevance of All-American Publications gets short shrift, as far as I'm concerned.

For example, when I start posting the books, you will notice that without fail, every CGC slab label will indicate that these books are from "D.C. Comics". 

For the love of all things comics, these are NOT D.C. Comics - they are ALL-AMERICAN PUBLICATIONS Comics    (as I explain above)

 Well, I hope that by specifically collecting this set and featuring it here, I'm doing my part to rectify this injustice

Congrats Ed, that is anusual goal to complete for sure!  One thing that grabbed me was the wonderful crossection of cool titles in it.

Rightly so, the first All-American Publications title, alphabetically speaking, is the self-named All-American Comics. Although this title began in 1939 (with issue #1, of course), the first issue to feature the "true" logo was issue #64, from March 1945:

According to Metropolis (from whom I bought this copy), this is the Ohio copy:

...and, here, from December 1945, the last issue of this title to bear "the" logo...after this, the DC logo returned (because after this, DC actually owned the title):

For the next title, we have All-Flash. The first "true" logo was on issue #17, in December 1944 (perhaps the earliest appearance of the cover logo  ...we'll see ):

Apparently, Max was fond of naming comic titles with the "ALL-" prefix   Next up, we have All Star...just like with All-Flash, only 3 issues bear the logo, beginning with # 24 (from March 1945)
