Anyone know what this is? Mold? 

My brother, who is the keeper of our silver, bronze and modern collection from when we were kids was going through the long boxes in his closet and found this issue. 

Not sure how many books are affected

It looks like one end of the long box got wet.  Any water damage noticeable on the ceiling above, in the closet?

I would not have removed them indoors.  That could be toxic.  You can smell mold or mildew.  Sorry about you collection.  I usually check up on my comics every so often.

Looks like water got under the box somehow, so good call CD. Mostly drek anyway, and seems to be the only box affected.

The photo of the longbox looks like termites, but it's hard to be definitive from a photo!

But I had a box that Looked Literally Identical to your pictures

It was a run of JLA Volume 2 or 3...the entire box was cover inside...half of the comics didnt have bags and backers and would disintegrate if you touch them...

It was quite odd...

your pictures immediately brought back memories...luckily the books werent worth much...
