I was going to say the exact same thing. The first Essential I purchased was the Uncanny X-Men collection, I was working at the comic shop the day it came out. I don't remember exactly how much it cost, but I think it was something insane like $8.95 for a phone-book's worth of comic pages, and the art was beautiful. I sold a bunch to customers that day with that exact pitch.

Yup.  Once I discovered them, for a bargain price and with the great print quality of the earlier volumes, buying them for lots of reading material was a no-brainer.

The essential early Journey into Mystery with Thor 83-110 (or close to it) are great , i read them as a teen but forgot much of it...

the unrequited love between lame Dr Blake and Jane Foster was heartbreaking .. they both loved each other so much but were afraid to let the other know because they feared they were unworthy of his/her love

The Lee / Kirby stories really become consistently good reads post issue 100.  I especially like Kirby's art inked by Chic Stone.

Also, some DC Showcase volumes featuring war comics that might interest you...

Can anyone tell me if the "Essentials" line ever reprinted abridged stories?

For example: do the Kirby/Lee Fantastic Four volumes use the original '60s comics as source material, as opposed to using the often edited/abridged versions reprinted during the '70s in Marvel's Greatest Comics, where full-page panels and/or spreads were sometimes removed?

 Thanks!

I have over 100 Essentials and yes Marvel has edited a few editions especially the horror titles by blanking out some panels with shadows to cover some nudity. As for the FF I don't know, although that title was not adult themed like the horror magazine runs reprinted in the Dracula volumes.
