This may have happened during encapsulation. I wouldn't give this a 9.8 with that folded corner...

Me either. Or the lower left corner ding. I would however be extremely pissed at the grader for folding that corner. That doesn't help things. I would have given it 9.2 for the corner ding. Sorry about that.  That would be impossible to sell at a 9.8.

+1  But mistakes happen. CGC will either fix it or replace if there's a permanent defect that can't be remedied.

The reason I suspect that this happened during encapsulation is because the book was graded a 9.8. If the corner had been folded over prior to that, the book very likely wouldn't have attained that grade (or it would have ended up being sent to CCS).

Unfortunately, with the inherent fragility of comic books, these things are going to happen, especially when a company is handling thousands of comics every week. And the fact that the book made it through the system with no one catching this flaw indicates to me a need for more effective quality control. In the "olden days" of CGC, graders actually worked in QC as well, and I suspect they caught more oversights like this one because they have a keener eye for detail...  :gossip:

That's what I thought. It had to happen during encapsulation, after the grade was given.
