Lando Calrissian, the beloved Star Wars scoundrel, will be getting his very own Disney+ series, Lando, from Justin Simeon. Simien’s past work includes the critically and popularly acclaimed film Dear White People, as well as the hit Netflix series of the same name. The show will be the latest and highest-profile outing for Lando to date, thrusting one of the franchise’s most popular side characters into the main character seat for the first time.

Introduced in the 1980s, The Empire Strikes Back as the conniving, double-crossing. Still, the well-intentioned governor of Cloud City, Lando Calrissian, quickly became a vital piece of the Star Wars universe. He returned in 1983’s Return of the Jedi and has recently seen a significant resurgence in the series, appearing in both The Rise of Skywalker (played as he was in the original trilogy by Billy Dee Williams) and Solo: A Star Wars Story (played by Donald Glover).

Now, Disney has announced that the Bespin-based gambler, conman, and space pilot will be getting his own series on Disney+. It’s unclear who will play the iconic role or when in the saga Lando will be set, but given the huge span of canonical time the character is active in the storyline, there are near-endless possibilities. At this time, there is no definite release date planned.

While speaking with CinemaBlend at the Star Wars Celebration Event, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy shared a Lando TV show update. The studio head confirmed that Donald Glover is expected to lead the Disney+ series but that the multihyphenate's busy schedule is keeping the show from making major progress. See what Kennedy said below:

"You need to ask Donald. He's the one that holds all the cards here. But there's no movement. I will say that honestly. But it's not for lack of trying. It's just that he's a very busy guy. ... He's got another series, and I think one other thing, and then he'll come our way. So patiently waiting."

That sounds like they want to move this forward sooner rather than later. And the actor schedule is the temporary hurdle.

There are changes afoot for the Star Wars Disney+ series focusing on the younger days of Lando Calrissian, as portrayed by Donald Glover in Solo: A Star Wars Story. Primarily that it's not actually going to be a series anymore, but is being turned into a movie instead.

This is just the latest shift for the show, which at one point was to be overseen by Dear White People (and on the Disney front, the new Haunted Mansion movie) creator Justin Simien but has been taken over by Donald Glover, working with brother and creative partner Stephen.

The pair, who co-created the Glover-starring comedy/drama series Atlanta, were working on the series concept, but Stephen Glover revealed on the podcast Pablo Torre Finds Out (find the interview below) that their thinking has changed.

"It’s not even a show," he said. "The idea right now is to do a movie."
