Get ready for more modern medieval action as The Old Guard 2 has been given a greenlight by Netflix.

One of the biggest surprise hits of last year, a year void of many big studio releases due to the COVID-19 pandemic, was Netflix’s The Old Guard starring Charlize Theron. Noted for its eye popping action and its fresh take on the superhero narrative, the comic adaptation proved to be diamond in the rough for Netflix in 2020.

The Illuminerdi can officially report that after much speculation, The Old Guard 2 has officially gotten the go ahead from Netflix. Cast and crew details were not made available to us at this time, but it can be assumed that the original cast is set to return, and Gina Prince-Bythewood is likely to return to the director’s chair.

A sequel to the graphic novel, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied, was published in 2019, so The Old Guard 2 could closely follow that source material. The original film ended with a despondent Booker in exile coming across Quynh in his apartment. Quynh was once a member of the guard who was captured, sealed in an iron maiden, and plunged into the sea to drown for all eternity due to her immortal powers. The sequel could explore her state of mind and uncover how she escaped, and after all these years where her loyalties lie.

The sequel to Netflix's comic book adaptation The Old Guard has a completed -script, and will go into production early next year, according to star and executive producer Charlize Theron. She didn't provide many details, but Theron told Variety that not only is the -script finished, but the gay couple played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli, will "definitely" be returning, too. The Old Guard was one of Netflix's big pandemic hits, and marked one of two major adaptations of comics and graphic novels written by Greg Rucka to be released in the couple of years, along with Stumptown on ABC.

“Somehow it was meant to come out in [2020],” Theron said shortly after the film's release. “And it was meant to just be on people’s TVs. In the end, that’s why I think it was so successful. It thematically speaks to things that people were going through. And so part of me is like, ‘So what if it wasn’t on a big screen?’ I’m not mad at the fact that probably more people saw The Old Guard than any other movie that I’ve ever made, outside of Fast & Furious, in a theater.”

Is there a release date for The Old Guard 2?
As of April 2023, we’re still in the dark about the official release date for The Old Guard 2, but it’s expected to hit Netflix sometime in 2023. While the pandemic and busy schedules caused delays, the good news is that Variety reported in 2021 that the sequel would begin filming in early 2022. KFTV then reported in Sept. 2022 that filming had wrapped in Rome, Italy.

The Old Guard 2 cast
The original cast is set to return, including the fierce Charlize Theron as Andy/Andromache and the talented KiKi Layne as Nile Freeman.

The sequel will also feature Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, adding some fresh blood to the immortal squad. And let’s not forget about the enigmatic Quynh and Booker, played by Ngô Thanh Vân and Matthias Schoenaerts, respectively. We can’t wait to see where their journey takes them in this electrifying follow-up.

Recently, Evans told Variety that The Old Guard 2's ending warrants another movie in the now-potential trilogy. He said, "There’s an ending to No. 2 that kind of demands a No. 3, which makes me very happy." Naturally, viewers don't yet know how the sequel's ending pans out. If it's anything like the first movie's ending, it may continue to bring in new and key immortals to the franchise. Additionally, Evans danced around whether Charlize Theron would return for a threequel, only noting her support for the movies.
