Steve Borock says CGC cases need to be changed every 8-10 years

Love your Quick Draw avatar. I think Borock is correct in that Cgc slabs should be changed out every 8 years. Have seen 1950s comics with fragile spines and creamy paper have the spine almost disintegrate while in the slab. One would only notice if one cracked the comic out (to choke * read) though.

Not even going to read through this thread to see the response to this.

1. With legions of super-anal boardies eager to post anything and everything about comics or CGC, in the ~20 years of these boards we’ve yet to see a pic of such a “disintegrating comic.”

2. With a dozen or so archival scientists on the boards the consensus has been “not sure of the long term consequences” unless we’re talking a century or so.

3. With thousands of posts (including many GA) supporting the opposite (“books still look great after X years”), how are they preserved while (unsubstantiated) others are not?

4. Is it surprising that a company asserts the need to consume one of their products without any real empirical evidence or compelling conceptual argument?

5. Lastly, what is the scientific explanation for needing to crack the book out to see such disintegration?

The physical trauma of mailing your slabs to CGC will reduce their grade more than any degradation they incur staying in the slab. There may be some merit to the argument they are preserved better in mylars, but that has yet to be established.
