Yeah but paper money is backed by squat as well. It won't be crypto causing a crash, it'll be people not believing the system anymore.

The whole thing is nonsensical, but as long as my job  pays me in a way that feeds me and keeps a roof over my head, I'll play.

BTW I don't own any crypto, just fascinated by both sides of the fence on what constitutes currency. Hell, some societies used stones with holes in them at some point

Paper money is backed by the governments that recognize them, and they have nuclear weapons. Elon Musk can tweet about Bitcoin and Dogecoin all he wants, and he's richer than anyone I know will ever be, but for all of his wealth, he doesn't have nukes. That's the difference.

Already went over this.

Myanmar has a drug dealer for a government right now because they bought the army and kill anyone who opposes them.

We don't call them drug dealers and a government because it's impolite.

Paper, electronic, bitcoin, its all the same. It has intrinsic value in that you have to believe it has value. The second you don't, it's worth less than the paper its printed on.

Take electricity away for a week and see how people really live.

I dont think the hobby as a whole is talking about those books.  More so the keys and semi keys.

Not getting your stock market remark.  Generally comics have outperformed the stock market since I graduated from college back in 2003, at least for the average investor.  Stock market has never outperformed any of my CGC invoices. (shrug)

Stock market is absolutely killing it - more so than comics - SP500 in 2003 was less than 1,000.  It pays dividedens and you don’t have to pay taxes on your gains (ROTH IRA, Reverse ROTH etc.).  Nasdaq has done even better.

He is not talking about buying and selling slabs. He is talking about finding a cheap raw, maybe pressing it, and then getting it slabbed. There is a whole lot more expertise going on with that than picking the right books, and luck.

Are you really comparing Myanmar to the USA or the European Union in terms of currency stability/confidence?

I probably have more cofidence in bitcoin than the Myanmar currency, i don't disagree,

I dunno.

Say the US turns into an dictatorship and starts putting people in labor camps. You going to stay because they have nukes or you going to find somewhere to immigrate?

Whether it's a bubble or a correction, I can afford neither.

So, pragmatically, stressing about a definition has become quite pointless to me.

I was going to read thru this thread to come up with a response but nothing says it better than what was quoted.

my wife is working on her italian citizenship, but the last e-mail from the company that does these things basically made it sound like we'd need to make a bribe to move it forward as, conveniently, all the relevant family birth records are in a condemned building in sicily they can't get into...

that sucks.  The stereotype is that things are controlled by mafias there, right? Wonder how true that is.

You should throw CGC 8.0 onto your ASM #300 for a real surprise. :gossip: :foryou:

@valiantman okay, you got me to bite, but not seeing much of a difference compared to the 9.2-9.8 books - are you seeing something I'm not?  There wasn't as much early data on 8.0s as people weren't submitting them at as high of a rate then (I'm assuming).

It's been a while now, but I remember doing an analysis a few years ago where the assumption was the 9.8 was "the way to go" when it was actually CGC 8.0 that was far and away the highest return... for a 1980s comic.  I was shocked, but obviously, not shocked enough to remember the specifics. lol

Goes back to my earlier point, perspective and timeframe.  IF you were looking at 2013 through 2020, then, 9.8s have outperformed, and 8.0s were roughly the same outperformance.  If you look at 2012 through 2020, then 9.8s are king, 8.0s fared better than 9.2-9.6, but not as well as 9.8s.  Long term everything is about the same.  Short term (2021 year to date) 9.8s are the weakest performer (which did surprise me).  I was also surprised that long term 9.8s did not outperform.
