Earlier in the thread (sorry, too lazy to go back and look) someone mentioned the Alex Ross JSA covers, and I agree, I think they're super, particularly the black "portrait" covers. So simple and powerful. Picked up a run of these at a Peddler's Mall this weekend.

The newsstand books in that set are especially eye-catching, if you have been bitten by the bug for that sort of thing. :cloud9:

That was me. They're gorgeous imo. Congrats oo the find.  Buy, buy, buy.

There you are! Sorry for the laziness in giving you credit, but I think you're 100% right on track with these. Plus, even if they never pop at all, they're just a really super nice set of books. I bought them off the stands originally, and they were lost in the great sell off several years ago. Glad to have them back in the fold, and I'll be looking for more!

Absolutely! Nowadays I pick up pretty much any high grade newsstand of a "main character" book from the last 20 years when I run into them in the wild. I'm also trying to build high grade Batman and Wolverine newsstand sets, sticking strictly to bargain bins. Slow going, but fun to chase!

Haha ! Wasn't looking for credit, just agreeing with you. :gossip: I like the Action #775 at the top of your pic even more than the JSA pics...but not by much. (thumbsu

Hey, I believe in giving credit where it's due!

And yeah, at the same location that yielded the Ross JSA's, I did pretty well on some other spec picks, including two minty fresh Action 775's, one a newsstand, paid $2.25 each, happily! Here they are, along with some other goodies I picked up.

East of West #1 - Death as a hero ? How good can a book get ? Well, there's Planetary, The Authority, and East of West that are the pinnacle of comics to date for me. I've managed to accumulate over 100 copies of #1 and more than 10 compete sets. There is no book on the shelves that I'd rather read or collect. Numerous interesting characters exist in this universe and I'm expecting issue #50 is only the end of part of that universe.

I hadn't heard of this series until your suggestion. One of the first books I read as a kid was "On a Pale Horse" by Piers Anthony where the personification of Death is the main protagonist and it's been a favorite since (hence, Thanatos in my username). I've been really enjoying this East of West series and wanted to thank you for the suggestion. Picked up a couple #1's online and looking for one of the Forbidden Planet variants, such a cool cover.

Neat story and thanks, I appreciate it. I'm thrilled that you liked it. I only have one Forbidden Planet #1 anymore. Someone sold a ton of them cheap a year or to ago in CGC 9.8 condition. I can't remember why I didn't buy them all but I think its because so many were available at one time. I guess I assumed they always would be. lol

lol

It was the toughest 1st day issues that you could buy over the counter for certain. Then the Ghost, followed by the regular cover. The RRP was the one I expected to be 1A but it featured the Ranger as did the Ghost variant. The Forbidden Planet is the rarest cover featuring the character I perceive to be center of the EoW universe.

Niiiice. BUT, it's copper, not modern, therefore you are a bad person, and will soon be escorted out of the building by Nerd Security. Sorry.

Haha...I'm so disconnected!  It didn't even occur to me that '84 is now Copper.  Then my original choice would still stand.  I don't know if you can find a 9.8 Invincible #1 for $1k, anymore, but that's what I'd strive for.

Since 1984 was 33 years ago, Albedo #2 is now the same age that Amazing Fantasy #15 was in 1995. :foryou:
