FX Moving Forward With 'What We Do in the Shadows' Series

Filmmaker Taika Waititi may have seemed like an overnight success after helming November's Thor: Ragnarok, yet the filmmaker has been making a name for himself with much smaller-budgeted films in New Zealand like Hunt for the Wilderpeople, Boy and What We Do in the Shadows. The director's creativity has proven incredibly successful, with FX deciding to move forward with a TV series based on Shadows.

Waititi and Jemaine Clement will executive produce the new series, having previously directed, written and starred in the 2014 mockumentary. Waititi is slated to direct the half-hour series with Clement writing.

The film depicted the daily lives of a group of vampires who lived together in a house in New Zealand. A variety of different vampire archetypes were depicted, from the Nosferatu-esque Petyr to the sexual dynamo Vlad, clearly inspired by the more seductive Dracula.

The upcoming series is slated to star Kayvan Novak (Danger Mouse), Matt Berry (Toast of London), Natasia Demetriou (Year Friends) and Harvey Guillen (The Internship). It is unknown at this time if Waititi or Clement will appear in the series.

Last year, Waititi teased to Fandango that the TV series was happening, but pointed out the show would change locations.

"We're trying to develop a U.S. version of What We Do in the Shadows," Waititi revealed. "You know, set here in the states, but a T.V. show."

Big appearances on the last episode.

Taika Waititi directed it, and included:

  • We’ve got the trio of vamps from the original film version of What We Do In The Shadows, played by Waititi, Clement, and Jonathan Brugh
  • Rachel Wood, who played Sophie-Anne Leclerq, vampire queen of Louisiana, on HBO’s True Blood
  • Danny Trejo, who played vampire bartender Razor Charlie in the original movie version of From Dusk ‘Til Dawn
  • Paul Reubens, who wasn’t the big bad but had a pretty great death scene in the original film version of Buffy The Vampire Slayer
  • Tilda Swinton, Only Lovers Left Alive, the film that earned Swinton her vampire wings
  • Kristen Schaal as The Summoner (starred with Clement on Flight of the Concords
  • MCU’s own Dave Bautista, who is always recognizable even with a bunch of latex on his face

And the big appearance.

Standards are standards!

What We Do In the Shadows Wouldn’t Let Cate Blanchett Be a Vampire

Quote

Wednesday night’s episode of What We Do in the Shadows ended up being an unexpectedly epic vampire reunion. Including, of course, the original cast of the film version Taika Waititi, Jonny Brugh, and Jemaine Clement.

And while the show was full of big gets for the trio, according to a very spoilery interview in Entertainment Weekly, it could’ve been even bigger. While making their ambitious list of every actor who has ever played a vampire they could feasibly cast, they accidentally included Cate Blanchett.

“I think maybe people got confused.” Waititi told the magazine. “I was like, ‘Cate, have you ever played a vampire?’ She was like, ‘No, but I’d love to.’ I was like, ‘But you haven’t?’ ‘No.’ ‘Well then you can’t be in the show.’” Apparently, Blanchett fought him, but he insisted “those are the rules!” See? Even Cate Blanchett has to follow the rules.

:D

‘What We Do in the Shadows’ Series Brings In Big Guest Stars on the Vampiric Council

To me, this was the best. BLADE IS BACK!

Then there were the ones they tried, and couldn't pull off.

Then we get to the cameos that couldn’t be. Viago calls out for Rob, but gets no response. Evan Rachel Wood says she talked to him and said that he didn’t want to come, preferring to “leave it behind.” Obviously this is a reference to Robert Pattinson starring in Twilight. Another person who couldn’t make it was The Lost Boys star Kiefer Sutherland, who Tilda was surprised to learn was actually too busy to attend. And then of course Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt from Interview with a Vampire weren’t interested. Trejo says they’re not committed like the rest of them, but Viago says it’s just an availability thing.
