Who decides what the definitive pronouncement is? The writer?

Growing up, It was always...

Thae-nos

Me-feast-o

Mag-neat-o

And I always pronounced it as Professor Ex-Zav-yer (later I was told it was like "Xylophone", there's no "x" sound.

Maybe the article I read wasn't allowing for regional variation; American as well as British?

So, those statements can't be all-inclusive and definitive.
