I'm loving this thread.

Big fan of Ross Andru's Spider Man.

Hey, Spider-Variant how about this one?

Superman vs Amazing Spider-Man.

METROPOLITAN MUSEUM.png

Yes, that was on my list.  The Metropolitan Museum appeared in Issue 134 as well.  I try to find the same vantage points Ross used, but there may not be good photo of this one, lol.

When I finish ASM (which is nearly complete), I'll tackle Ross's work on Marvel Team-Up and SuperMan vs Amazing Spider-man.

Hey @Winterboy glad you like the thread.  How long you been collecting, got any cool stories, any cool Spider-Man stuff, any Ross Andru original art?

Not a large following for Ross in this thread, but some good dudes posting.

Thanks, Spider-Variant!

Andru is one of the best Spider-Man artists but  he is very underrated.

I'm an avid fan of classic Spider-Man, unfortunately I don't have any original art and I have just few back issues of Spectacular: Spider Man and Marvel Tales. It's very hard to bring this stuff to Brazil.

I collect Marvel Masteworks which is the closest I can get to the original material.

Best.

ps: I'm drawing a classic Spider-Man comic,just for fun. :)

Nice.  I sold all my collection but still have the Marvel Masterworks editions.

In celebration of Veteran's Day, I have posted all the Ross Andru real life references that I have found and documented with photographic comparisons over the last two years in this thread. My list has about 120 places in New York City (with a few from Paris, France) that Ross used to make it seem like Spider-Man inhabited NYC during his run on Amazing Spider-Man.

Is this list complete?  I'm sure it's not, as there are buildings that Ross drew that are very unique and are most likely real.  There are some non-descript buildings that Ross most likely used in ASM as well.  Gerry Conway said Ross would come over to his apartment building and go up on the roof and draw buildings to use in ASM.

Is this list accurate?  I'd say about 95%.  The cement plant from ASM 145 is a best estimate guess for sure, but the rest are pretty solid.

What's next?  I'll probably look at some Marvel Team Up issues Ross drew and the classic Superman vs Amazing Spider-Man for some more examples.

Personal Favorites:  Any panels Ross drew where I can retrace his exact steps and view from his exact same vantage point are my favorites.  I'd have to say the panel in ASM 152 with the Ravenswood Generating station as viewed from the Roosevelt Island Bridge is my favorite.

Oddities:  Ross used post cards and an automobile brochure as a guide for his depiction of the JFK airport in issues 143 and 144.  Ross also drew the 71st Regiment Armory (34th Street Armory) in issue 174, which had been torn down a few years before.

Open Items:  The Mindworm's house has never been photographically documented.  As I have posted, Marvel nearly got sued by the owner of a house that Ross used as his model of the Mindworm's home in Far Rockaway in Issue 138.  Kids kept showing up looking for the Mindworm.  I never found the real house.

I just wanted to say thank you for doing this!
Tremendous research. Makes going back through the issues that much more fun.

Andru's Spidey was always a bit of a mix of Gil Kane and Romita to me... angular & wiry, but not so slender like Ditko's version.
But his city stuff did have a different feel to it.
Thanks for pointing it out and nailing it down.

Thanks my friend.  I have to say finding these real life references gave me such a new perspective on the Spider-Man artist of my youth.  I will admit to getting a little bit of a rush when I could find the exact location Ross must have sat out to find his setting for the next issue of Amazing Spider-Man.  I think the ones below are my favorites (posted before in this thread), because I know exactly where Ross was standing to get his reference.

I don't think Ross was the best Spider-Man artist ever, but he will always be my favorite, driven by the love of collecting Spider-Man during my youth.

I love how you transposed the elements of spidey into the real time :x

Thank you for your passion, you put it across to be shared and it is greatly appreciated!

Here's one I missed on my list from ASM 167.  Ross put the St. Patrick's Cathedral in four or five issues of Amazing.  Lot of detail to put into one panel.

Awesome! I like how he even got the Aerial shot too of the roof that jets out :headbang: he must have had a vantage point somehow :)

Yes, I noticed that too.  I look now for postcard images to see if he used those in his work, after finding those in ASM 143 and 144.  I didn't look specifically for this one, but I haven't found anymore where Ross used postcards.
