Comic Collecting Paranoia.....Arrrrgh!
0

42 posts in this topic

Long time collector and Chat board viewer. New to posting due to dreaded comic collecting paranoia. What I mean to say is, I am reluctant to discuss and post my collecting wants and habits for fear of competition and price manipulation. It's a sickness. If everyone knows I want XXX, they'll compete with me or raises price because it's a want of mine.

For example, I have collected XXX title since I was a teen. Several years ago I discovered CGC and graded comics. Ooooh, what have we here I thought and subsequently acquired several graded books. I grabbed a couple of XXX graded 9.8 and thought to myself, gee, wouldn't be swell to have a run of XXX title for myself and quickly attempted to acquire said books. Well it didn't take this blunt crayon long to discover that others had the same thought with some having envious runs(they still do). So I continue my quest in anonymity hoping one day to complete my run.

To what end I ask myself? Self gratification, bragging rights, some of both I imagine. I feel as though I have been missing out on great deal this hobby has to offer by not interacting with other collectors. I have begun posting which I hope leads to becoming a normal fanboy, or fan old man as the case may be.

Still not ready to post my run to the registry - yet!

Regards

Welcome to the boards.

You can participate here without revealing what books you're chasing but frankly, showing your favorites or revealing your want list is more likely to lead to further purchases than to drive the price up.

Self-gratification maybe but bragging rights, not until you reveal what XXX is ...

Welcome to the Boards.

I've been collecting XXX for a while now too. It's possibly more addicting than comics.

We're talking about the same XXX right?

No, not that XXX. Years ago however I worked at a newsstand which sold mags(Time, Newsweek, Cosmo, etc), newspapers from across the country, as well as hardcore porn and comics from a spinner rack. I would pull my comics before loading up the ol spinner rack. Still have the comics, not the porn. You wouldn't believe the kind of people that came into that newsstand!

Oh, I'm not shy, just a little secretive. I'm sure before too long I'll be posting about collecting trends and habits and registering set(s). It's a great hobby with lot's to share. Especially if you have an opinion right?

I wouldn't worry about disclosure on the boards. One collector does not make a market.

And, on the upside, if you're paranoia proves correct, you'll drive up the prices on the books you already own ;)

Price manipulation happens but usually only with the higher grade uncommon comics. Not much point in trying to manipulate the price of X-men 282 in 9.8 but highest grade copies of GA Detective, Action or Planet...it is probably more common than most people want to think.

Agreed - often when folks know what you're after, they come to you with good deals. This is a great place :cloud9:

I would much rather sell a book at a discount to collector who will really cherish it, than to a stinkin' flipper....,

As long as it's not IMSM 1, you have nothing to worry about
