GI Jane

I can't remember if I posted about this already -- but about a month ago a bunch of GI Janes were offered on eBay.  There were a couple of higher grade copies (VG+ / FN-) that I didn't win, but otherwise I won the issues I was bidding on.  They weren't cheap, but considering the prices I've seen over the last 18 months at cons, I think I got them for market (or maybe a little better than market).  Here are the ones I got:

Nice haul Mike! Especially the #5. Usually goes to the moon. I had to get mine the old fashion way, one at a time...

Mopsy

Sometimes I feel like I'm the only person in the world who collects Mopsy.  Okay, she's not blonde.  But then, I think most polls have Veronica over Betty ,,,,

Anyway, I'm slowly building my graded Mopsy collection.  Copies in any grade are not frequently offered.  Here's my collection so far:

Cruising Provence and the Italian Riveria - Part 1

I haven't been posting in a while because I've been traveling for work.  I had to go to Sofia Bulgaria and then Heidelberg Germany.  Then my wife met me in Venice.  We stayed a few days there, and then went on a cruise of Provence and the Italian Riveria.  Yeah, I have to say, lately life doesn't suck.

I won't bore you with lots of pictures of our vacation.  I'll just show a few.  First, in Heidelberg, we went to a restaurant called Schnitzelbank that specializes in (duh) schnitzel.  The portions are huge.  Here's my order, schnitzel with mushroom gravy.

Here's an itinerary of our cruise, going from Rome to Marseille.

I'm a big bourbon fan, and the bars in our ship had an entire menu of Manhattans!  Not all with bourbon, one was even made with tequila.  Some of our cruise mates sampled all of the selections.  I just managed a few.

Finally, here are me and my wife at dinner in Venice the night before we boarded our cruise.

Schnitzelbank is great, I go to Heidelberg every so often for work.  Glad you enjoyed and were able to pick up some great books at the same time!

Love those Mopsys myself. I have quite a few. I believe Gladys Parker was a fashion designer as well. Really comes across in her comic book work.

I didn't know that, but it makes sense.  Mopsy was also in newspaper strips, and they are reasonably priced on eBay.  Here's one from my collection.

Matt Baker's Midget Comics

A few weeks ago I was surfing eBay and found a restored Midget Comics #1 (cover by Matt Baker).  The grade was 7.5 and the restoration was the type acceptable to me, and most of all, the price was discounted to reflect the fact that it was restored.  That's not always the case.  If you don't believe me, do a search on eBay of "CGC restored" and you will be amazed by the high prices on many restored books.

Anyway, the seller on eBay was Lone Star.  So I immediately went to the Lone Star site, because their prices are always lower on their site.  Yes, you often have to pay a consignment fee and shipping, but usually it's cheaper than buying on eBay (in fact, I can't remember a time when this wasn't the case).  Here's the book:

So now I actually have 2 copies of this somewhat rare comic.  I found my first copy last year.  In fact, just weeks before I bought the restored CGC copy, I sent my raw copy to CGC so soon I'll have 2 slabbed copies.  Here's my first copy:

I didn't know about this comic (didn't have it on my Baker list).  Is this an accepted Baker cover?

Recently I picked up a Fantastic Adventures pulp (from 1951).  It reminded me of one of my favorite Rangers comics, #21, so I bought it as soon as I saw it.  I find the art interesting.  The girl in Fantastic Adventures seems defeated, whereas the girl in Rangers 21 looks ready to fight.  Of course, it helps to have a soldier with a gun on your side.

Sunday Heritage Results

I picked up a few books a couple weeks ago on the Heritage Sunday auction.  First I got a run of Henry Alrich for a great price.  The best of the bunch (and one of my favorite GGA covers) was #13.

1168135768_HenryAldrichComics8(Dell1951)CGCVG4.0.thumb.jpg.682003e22be478273dade73a9dc1d711.jpg388196690_HenryAldrichComics12(Dell1952)CGCFN-5.5.thumb.jpg.1fb1eb0031e954b4a3c0ae69d2427abe.jpg1706075456_HenryAldrichComics13(Dell1952)CGCFN-5.5.thumb.jpg.cadc72b4eefb16b6f15e2dec87fac5bd.jpg

My big win of the evening was Boots #9.  Boots has great GGA, and #9 is way under-rated IMHO (similar to the way Junie 5 is under-rated).

Latest CGC Invoice

I got some books back from CGC the other day.  I got Real Love 42 from Terry's Con earlier this year.  I paid way too much for it -- if I had to do it again I would have passed -- but at least it came back in the grade I was expecting.

I got Mazie 23 at the SDCC.  What a great deal for $50!  Kinda evens out the bad deal with Real Love 42.

I picked up Romantic Secrets 31 from eBay -- or maybe from a boardie here, I can't remember.  I have a thing now for photo covers, and this is one of my favorites.

By the way, I'm disappointed with the CGC slabs on this order.  It's like the plastic is pressing down on the comic, resulting in some distortion.  You can see this in the Real Love comic, with bubbles on the girl's nose and forehead.  You can see similar bubbles in the other 2 comics.  These defects are due to the slabs, not the comics inside.  I can only hope this resolves itself over time, or perhaps I'll take them in to CGC the next time I see them at a con.

Love that Fawcett, always been a favorite of mine too.  Great hot pink background. :applause:

And those bubbles are what are referred to as Newton Rings.  I think we had kinda thought this particular problem, which began resurfacing around May, had run its course by around mid August/September, but apparently not completely fixed yet.  You can send them back for reholdering.

Thanks.  @szavisca mentioned the same thing to me about the Newton Rings.  In the same box from CGC, I got these books that do not suffer from the same flaw.  They are lower grade and, unlike the others, do not have glossy covers.  So ironically, it seems this phenomenon impacts higher grade comics more than lower grade.  Which I guess makes sense.  The glossier covers reflect more light so they interact with the plastic of the slab.
