In fairness, old cases sometimes exhibited these, just not to the extent of the newest ones.

It is not a matter of fairness. It is a matter of contamination, and known gassing, and known Copolymer extrusion grade thermoformed material, that can also exhibit the problem with heat application, sonic or not, and all the other aspects I have previously mentioned. The sealed product could also have developed a minute separation that allowed a contamination. Who knows. But, "normal" it is not. My opinion, of course. For an entity to then describe the problem as "normal" and not address the lack of customer confidence, is normal, these days in business, though.

I would dispute that. the underlying contamination is not known, nor is the effect upon the enclosed product, without examination.

However, I don't think CGC is working on a 'resolution'. They think everything is fine, which technically it is because the books are not affected.

Sadly, if that is true, then I will have to try Option B.  I would rather wait longer than have newton rings.  :(

This year, I had a goal to submit 50 books a month.  The newton rings are fairly prevalent on all books.   August is the first month I have not submitted books.  I have more than 100 set aside for submission, but keep waiting on a resolution to the newton rings.  I looked at the competition and thought I would give them a try.  Looking at their forums, people are still waiting for their books back from March/April submissions.  So my options are A) submit and accept the newton rings, B) submit to the competitor and wait 6+ months for them to return, C) dont get them graded.  At this point, I am going to just keep them and wait for a resolution.

I am holding back a lot as well. I sub a few here and there for flipping but the ones I'm keeping in my PC, I'm holding.

I was also making a concentrated effort to get more comics in my personal collection slabbed as I'd really grown to like the look of the new slabs with the new CGC labels. But with the newton ring issue and complete lack of customer support from CGC I've resolved to stick to shiny crystal-clear mylars. Now I can spend all the money I've saved on more comics! :acclaim:

I'm just happy to see this lengthy thread, here, on the boards.  I've been complaining about newton rings for the last year and half.  It's amazing to me how many people aren't bothered by the rings. I just want to pay for a quality service where the finished product comes back looking as advertised. (ie, "crystal clear.")  It's like someone said earlier - you wouldn't send a photograph or a piece of art to a picture-framer, and be fine with it coming back with blemishes all over the front. CGC cases are like frames for our comics.

This book was graded

Grade Date: 07/13/2018

I just bought it off eBay, the good thing was, I thought the marks were dirt.  So maybe when the slabs are fixed I can have it reholdered.

I don't know that I will stop shopping, but I will be looking up the numbers to make sure they are older unless I know the seller..

Plus side is, "learn something EVERY day;) "

I don't have my own account

and credit from CGC isn't going to help me....if they reholder my books for "free"

Really kind of messes with my head...

I suppose that I could wait until a con and get them to do it then...

My LCS owner already did this with CGC for me when the new cases came out, he was nice enough to do it for free, but seriously?

Books have been coming back with bad newton rings for the last two years.  I don't think targeting books older than early 2018 is going to matter.  I was sending back books to get re-holdered over a year ago...

I agree. 100%. Not a good business practice, at all. The client did not make the mistake. A TPG should be happy and enthusiastic to get a label error off the street.

Update: I questioned the partial reimbursement, they relooked it, and decided to reimburse me fully. Good on them. (thumbsu

Given the latest attention to the issue on these Boards, I am more inclined to state: Good for the customers and Board members that are proactive(thumbsu

Nothing happens in a vacuum, in such matters. The "decision" was response to proactive questioning, including yours. That is a good thing.

It means management is listening.
