I didn’t buy much art this year compared to others. My 3 favorites at Dark Phoenix painting by E.M. Gist used for a print by Upper Deck, 1994 Marvel Masterpieces Captain America Holofoil Card Painting by the Hildebrandts, and Morbius 2 Variant Cover by E.M. Gist.

This year I had an accident which resulted in lots of medical expenses. I also took a few trips (even more expenses). Therefore, my comic budget was very small. I acquired some keys on my list anyway. Most are restored or lower grade. These are the best ones. This is probably the year I've spent the least on comics since I re-entered the hobby. I've also found it's just as fun to collect when you're doing it on a budget. 

ASM 2 and 3.. completed my 1-100 run. Finally!   

Also got an FF12, my favorite book of the run.

I went a bit LB Cole crazy this year, buying just about anything of his that looked interesting, including comics, art, paperbacks, whatever, trying to decide which of his work I like best.

Ultimately it's his rocketship covers that turned into my favorite so I'm working on getting the best copies I can find (and afford). 

The giraffe sketch I couldn't pass up. It has great detail and looks really impressive in hand.

Here are my top 3 acquisitions of 2019.  One of which I just picked up and haven’t posted yet until now.  
 

1.   Fantastic Four 1.  It took several hours to close this deal but it was definitely worth all the back and forth.  
 

 

2.  Chamber of Chills 19.  I don’t primarily collect PCH, but when this copy popped up, I had to have it..  CT and all.

 

3.   And finally, my newest pickup of 2019, which will probably be posted at least one more time in Gold, Boy Comics 10.  This classic WWII cover with the dreaded Iron Jaw is a book that I never thought I’d own.  Yeah, it’s low grade but I don’t give two hoots.  Definitely can’t go out and find one of these everyday.

My Top Three for the year.

This was my first slab purchase in 2019, I won it in a Pedigree Comics Grand Auction. Any 9.8 example in the number 300s from Action Comics is a treat for me, and this one also happens to be from my favorite pedigree, I have 15 Rock Mountain examples. This piece belong to another collector, who reached out to me with telling me he was selling his collection and that I should have first choice, I was only interested a few pieces and he never responded back. I also sent this piece in to be reholdered but CGC said it would not retain the same grade. Long story, the book was pressed and regraded at 9.8 and is now housed in a new holder with a bland Pedigree Label.

Another Pedigree, I may have spent too much on this one, but I had to have it. I was actually going after another book that I knew would be expensive, I had a few months to plan and I started selling a bunch of books to try and make it work. I raised a good chunk of change but I fell short, the book I was originally going after ended up realizing $2,301! It all worked out for the better in the end.

I actually had another 9.8 of this book that I picked up a few years ago, I then sold it less than six months later (for the same price I paid for it) to accommodate a really special book. I happened to come across this on eBay by accident and figured I'd keep an eye on it. I ended up placing the winning big on my phone while waiting in the checkout lane at the grocery store. This book also got me to dig out all of my Batman Trade Paperbacks to revisit the Batman stories of the Copper Age and I'm having a blast re-reading all of them.

I'm happy to show these! The Romita Sub-Mariner/ Spider-Man cover is my favorite!

Wow those are some amazing books. I've been reading comics online since I joined the Marines 13 years ago while I was stationed in Okinawa. I just started actually collecting this year since I'm finally at a point in my life where I have the budget to start collecting. There were a lot of lessons learned about pricing, storage, and grading but I think I'm getting there lol. My first two are off at CGC right now.

1. Avengers 4- Captain America has been my favorite hero since I was a kid and his first appearance in the Silver Age was my biggest want. Luckily the stars aligned a couple weeks ago and was able to pick one up at a great price.

2. Silver Surfer 4- Thor is another of my favorite characters and this is hands down my favorite comic book cover of all time. Hopefully I can upgrade to a better copy down the road.

3. Fantastic Four 49- Pretty self explanatory lol. Great key book and the cover is way better than 48 so I'm happy. I was also able to get a low grade 50 so maybe next year I'll be able to complete the set.

I also bought the [True-Life Divorce] pages Mike Royer recreated and inked for the upcoming Kirby's Dingbat Love from TwoMorrow's Publishing, but promised not to show them  before the book is released- Otherwise I might have posted them instead of the MM pages. It was supposed to have been last month, but now January.

That suspense comics #3 cover looks like something out of Indiana Jones, but almost 40 years earlier.  Very cool.
