I Bought A Mystery Collection 2 2

A friend was helping out one of his friends sell his small collection (long box and as half) and asked me if I was interested. I was told there a very low grade Tales of Suspense 57 and some of the books had water damage. He wanted $500. I thought it would be fun and not much risk to buy it sight unseen and see if I could get $500 out of it.

Here is what I'm working with, looks very grim:

So yeah, the first book I pulled out was Darkhawk. How funny is that? It got better with the next two books being from the 60s/70s at least. Unfortunately, everything is in bad shape and pretty much worthless.  Then, sitting between Saga of Crystar 3 and Doom Patrol 50 (seriously) was a pretty nice 50s horror book, Spook 27! Woah. That should cover the cost right there.

Question for those of you that buy collections all the time, is this kind of collection odd?  Comics from the 50s/60s/70s/80s/90s, DC/Marvel/ mix? Barely bagged with no boards. Seems crazy to me.

yuck. the spook 27  might not be able to pay for the whole thing. an ok looking 3.5 just sold for $175. there are a couple of decent books in there (defenders 10, etc.), but if you are grading heavily water damaged books as 2.0s you might have some unhappy buyers. it is all subjective and I don't know what CGC does, but when I see that stuff I avoid like the plague. anyway, maybe you get the $500 back, maybe turn a profit, but it sounds like work. maybe the next 50 or whatever will be better.

My wife wouldn't let me in the house with a box of books like that. I'd have to play with them in the garage.

I have definitely seen some odd collections in my time so seeing an atomic age book in a collection like that is not unusual to me.  Often times in the 90s, you would go to a local comic convention and there would be at least one dealer with some cool 50s books.  So maybe they made a trade or the collector saw a cool cover and figured spending $10 bucks was worth it.  Hope you can get your money back and read some cool comics if nothing else!

you can market the real stinkers as great books to practice pressing on. I actually have a magazine box of books like that i had been putting to the side. i have like 10 warped copies of iron man 59 I don't know what to do with.
