CGC-certified Batman and Spider-Man Comics in Hake’s Auction

Posted on 2/29/2024

The first appearances of villains such as Poison Ivy and Doctor Octopus are available in a March Hake's sale.

An upcoming Hake’s auction will have collectors chillin’ like a villain, with several comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) featuring the first appearances of popular villains. Bidding is already underway for Hake’s Auction 240, which is scheduled for March 19-20, 2024.

Among the highlights of this auction is an Amazing Spider-Man #3 graded CGC 8.5, featuring the first appearance of Doctor Octopus. Also known as Otto Octavius, Doctor Octopus is a brilliant but unhinged scientist in the Marvel Comics Universe. Initially portrayed as a respected nuclear physicist, a laboratory accident fuses his body with four powerful mechanical tentacles, granting him superhuman strength and agility. Driven by his thirst for power and scientific curiosity, Doctor Octopus becomes one of Spider-Man's most formidable adversaries, often utilizing his intellect to engineer elaborate schemes to defeat the web-slinger and further his own ambitions.

Also of note is a Batman #181 graded CGC 9.4, which features the first appearance of Poison Ivy. In the comics, Dr. Pamela Isley possesses a unique blend of beauty and lethal botanical prowess. With a deep-seated connection to nature, she views plants as her allies and seeks to protect them at any cost, often resorting to criminal activities to achieve her environmentalist goals. Poison Ivy's ability to control plant life grants her formidable abilities in combat and manipulation, making her a recurring adversary for Batman and a complex character whose motivations blur the lines between villainy and environmental activism.
