CGC Comics Registry Featured Set: Star Wars OG 1977

This month's CGC Comics Registry set comes from member With-U-Is-The-Force! and a galaxy far, far away.

For more than 40 years, Star Wars has thrilled audiences in theaters as well as in comic books, which have offered adaptations of the big-screen stories along with introducing new classics of their own. This month’s featured set is With-U-Is-The-Force!’s Star Wars OG 1977, a collection that has all 107 issues of the original Marvel Comics series — along with annuals, variants and reprints.

Created by George Lucas, the Star Wars saga first hit screens in 1977 with the groundbreaking film that would come to be known as “Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope.” Set in a galaxy far, far away, the story follows the epic struggle between the Jedi Knights and the Sith Lords, as well as the battle between the Rebel Alliance and the tyrannical Galactic Empire. With iconic characters and imaginative worlds, Star Wars has captivated audiences across generations.

The 1977 Marvel series brought these adventures to the colorful pages of comic books, captivating readers with its imaginative storytelling and dynamic artwork. Marvel's Star Wars comics introduced new characters and planets while weaving original tales that complement the events of the films. Decades later, these classic comic book stories remain cherished by fans, serving as a testament to the enduring legacy of the franchise and the creative possibilities it continues to inspire across different mediums.

  • Star Wars #1 graded CGC 9.8 – the debut issue adapting the first film, and the first appearance of Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, C-3PO and R2-D2.
  • Star Wars #1 35 Cent Price Variant graded CGC 9.4 – a rare and valuable variant.
  • Star Wars #2 graded CGC 9.8 – the first appearance of Han Solo, Chewbacca and Obi-Wan Kenobi
  • Star Wars #39 graded CGC 9.8 – beginning the Empire Strikes Back storyline.
  • Star Wars #42 graded CGC 9.8 – the first appearance of Boba Fett and Yoda.
  • Star Wars #68 graded CGC 9.8 – the origin of Mandalorians.
  • Star Wars #107 graded CGC 9.8 – the final issue of the series.

These comics, and more, helped this set win Best in Set Type Award in 2022 and 2023, and the Best Set Copper Age Award in 2023.
