CGC-certified Pulp Magazines in Nail-biting Heritage Auctions Sale

Posted on 4/26/2024

The Heritage Auctions sale on May 9 includes pulp magazines such as Complete Detective #1 and a Shadow #237.

With more twists than a spooky back alley and more turns than a crook on the lam, the May Pulps Showcase Auction at Heritage Auctions features many pulp magazines graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), putting bidders on the edge of their seats. Online bidding is already underway for the auction, which is being held on May 9, 2024.

In February 2024, CGC announced it would begin accepting pulp submissions. Characterized by their low-cost production on pulp paper, pulp magazines featured a wide range of genres, and were known for their lurid cover art, sensationalist storytelling and serialized content.

A coveted title in the auction is a Complete Detective #1 graded CGC 5.0 (lot 75022). Each issue of Complete Detective was a treasure trove of thrilling narratives, featuring hard-boiled detectives, femme fatales and shadowy villains lurking in the dark alleys of urban landscapes. With its vivid cover art and gripping stories penned by renowned authors of the genre, Complete Detective offered readers an escape into a world where justice was served with a punch, making it an iconic publication in the golden age of pulp fiction. Issue #1 features a classic skeleton cover, which was popular among pulps, captivating audiences with their macabre allure and hinting at the thrilling mysteries and horrors awaiting within.

Another exciting pulp in this auction is an example of The Shadow #237 graded CGC 9.2 (lot 75104). The Shadow, a vigilante crime-fighter with a mysterious past and a chilling laugh, became an iconic hero of the pulp magazine era during the 1930s and 1940s. Clad in a dark cloak and fedora, The Shadow's adventures were serialized in pulp magazines, captivating readers with his uncanny ability to cloud men's minds and his relentless pursuit of justice against the criminal underworld. With gripping tales penned by prolific authors such as Walter B. Gibson, The Shadow's enigmatic persona and thrilling escapades solidified his status as one of the most enduring and beloved figures in pulp fiction history.
