Posted on 12/2/2022

Thirteen comics graded by CGC each sold for over $100,000 in the Heritage Auctions sale in November 2022.

An Amazing Fantasy #15 graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) set a new record for its grade when it realized more than half a million dollars in a Heritage Auctions sale. The book, which includes the first appearance of Spider-Man, was one of 13 CGC-certified comics that sold for over $100,000 in the Comics & Comic Art Signature Auction November 17-20, 2022.

The $552,000 price realized for the Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 92002) was the most a CGC 8.5 copy has ever achieved. Published in 1962 by Marvel Comics, Amazing Fantasy #15 is the first appearance of Spider-Man, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The CGC Census has 13 examples in this Universal grade, with only 26 recorded in higher Universal grades.

Swinging behind that was an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 92003) that sold for $336,000. This also beats the previous 9.6 sales record of $262,900 for this issue. After the immediate success of Spider-Man’s debut in Amazing Fantasy #15, Marvel Comics rushed the hero into his own monthly series in 1963.
