CGC-graded First Issues of Superman and Batman Titles in ComicConnect Sale
Posted on 5/31/2023
Two Golden Age grails featuring DC’s Superman and Batman are among many rare comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) available to collectors in an upcoming ComicConnect auction, taking place June 5-9, 2023.
Included in the sale is a Superman #1 graded CGC 2.0. This comic was published in 1939 by DC Comics, with writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, who debuted Superman in Action Comics #1 the previous year. The book marked the first time a comic book was devoted to a single superhero and helped change the landscape of superhero comics.

Also in the auction is a Batman #1 graded CGC 2.0. Following the success of Superman in Action Comics, DC introduced Batman in the pages of Detective Comics #27 in 1939. Like Superman, the character was an instant success for DC, which led to his own solo series in 1940. This issue by Bob Kane, Bill Finger and Jerry Robinson also famously introduced readers to Catwoman and the Joker.
Both Superman #1 and Batman #1 are among the most valuable comics in history. A Superman #1 graded CGC 8.0 currently holds the record price for any comic book, with a $5.3 million sale in January 2022. In January 2021, a Batman #1 graded CGC 9.4 set a record for its title with a $2.2 million sale.
