CGC-graded Captain America Comics #1 Featured in Heritage Auction

Posted on 5/31/2023

Heritage Auctions' June sale includes CGC-graded comics with the first appearances of Captain America, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four and more!

A comic book with the first appearance of Captain America is just one of the many classic grails, graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) being offered in an upcoming sale. Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction will be held June 22-25, 2023.

One of the top highlights is a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 9.2 — one of the highest-graded examples of this Golden Age grail. Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, Captain America Comics #1 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon features the first appearance of Captain America, Bucky and the Red Skull. The classic cover that shows Captain America punching Adolf Hitler is historically significant, because at that time America was not yet at war with Germany.

As of May 25, 2023, there were only 189 graded copies of Captain America Comics in the CGC Census, and only about half of them in the highly desirable blue label Universal grade. This comic is one of only three Universal copies graded CGC 9.2, with only three Universal examples graded higher in the CGC Census. One of those books, a CGC 9.4 example, realized $3.1 million in 2022.

An example of this book graded CGC 3.5 with a Promise Collection Pedigree is also offered in this auction.

Other CGC-certified comics in this auction include:

  • an Avengers #1 graded CGC 9.2
  • an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 8.0
  • an Amazing Spider-Man #1 graded CGC 9.4
  • a Fantastic Four #1 graded CGC 8.5
  • a Fantastic Four #48 graded CGC 9.8
  • an Incredible Hulk #1 graded CGC 8.0
  • an Incredible Hulk #181 graded CGC 9.8
  • a Showcase #4 graded CGC 8.0
  • a Superman #1 graded CGC 3.0
  • a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 graded CGC 9.2 with a Signature Series label for a Kevin Eastman signature and sketch and pedigreed to the Kevin Eastman Collection.
