Captain America #1 Certified by CGC Realizes $810,000

The first appearance of Captain America topped a group of 12 comics graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) that realized six figures each in Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction on June 22, 2023.
The top comic book in the sale was Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 9.2 (lot 91039), which realized $810,000. Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, Captain America Comics #1 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon features the first appearances of Captain America, Bucky and the Red Skull. This copy is one of the highest-graded examples of the Golden Age grail, with only three examples graded CGC 9.2 in the Census and just three others graded higher.
This sale more than doubles the previous sales record for this comic and grade, which was $343,057 in 2011.

Another example of this book, one graded CGC 3.5 with a Promise Collection pedigree (lot 91040), also appeared in the auction and realized $168,000.

- a Showcase #4 graded CGC 8.0 (lot 91052) that realized $132,000
- an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 7.0 (lot 92137) that realized $126,000
- a Fantastic Four #1 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 91044) that realized $117,000
- a Batman #1 graded CGC 1.8 (lot 91036) that realized $114,000
- a Superman #1 graded CGC 1.0 (lot 92117) that realized $108,000
- a Richie Rich #1 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 91051) that realized $108,000
