CGC-graded Debut of Hulk and TMNT offered in ComicLink Auction

Posted on 7/18/2023

The first appearances of the Hulk and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are among many fan-favorite Silver and Bronze Age comics offered in a July ComicLink auction.

Several fan-favorite comics have bidders seeing green in a ComicLink auction, featuring some of the most-sought-after Silver and Bronze Age books graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®). The auction continues through July 24, 2023.

Smashing its way to the top is an Incredible Hulk #1 graded CGC 3.0, published by Marvel Comics in 1962 by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. This comic introduces the Hulk, when Bruce Banner is exposed to dangerous radiation that transforms his body into the gray giant. According to Stan Lee, the gray color turned out to be quite challenging to maintain because of inconsistencies in the printing process. In some issues, the Hulk appeared gray, while in others, he appeared more of a greenish-gray or even fully green. To address this issue and create consistency, Marvel decided to change the Hulk's color to green in issue #2.

Also offered is a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles #1 graded CGC 9.4, published by Mirage Studios in 1984 by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. This self-published comic features the first appearance of the green team: the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who were created as a parody of contemporary superhero comic books. The comic was a huge success and was licensed to Playmates, who altered the tone of the noir story to a more child-friendly concept to sell their line of toys and an animated series in 1987. The rebrand was a huge success, but Eastman and Laird kept producing their own black-and-white Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comic book for mature audiences at Mirage Studios. In 2009, the rights were officially sold to Viacom (Nickelodeon), and the comics are still published at IDW Publishing.
