Golden Age Fox Comics, Graded by CGC, in Heritage Sale

Posted on 9/13/2023

Early Blue Beetle and Phantom Lady comics will cross the auction block on September 28, 2023.

Comics that feature some of the earliest Golden Age heroes, and graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), are being offered in an upcoming Heritage Auctions sale. Bidding is already underway for the Fox Comics Showcase Auction on September 28, 2023.

Fox Features Syndicate was a prominent American comic book publisher during the Golden Age of Comics. Founded by entrepreneur Victor S. Fox, the syndicate is renowned for producing a wide array of characters and series across various genres, including superheroes, crime, horror and romance. Among its notable creations were characters like the Blue Beetle, the Flame and the Phantom Lady. The Fox library was acquired by Charlton Comics, and then later by DC Comics.

Included in this auction is a Mystery Men Comics #1 graded CGC 5.5 (lot 82070), published in August 1939, with the first appearance of the Blue Beetle (Dan Garret). Also offered is a Blue Beetle #1 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 82007), published in Winter 1939, which tells the origin of Blue Beetle in this debut issue of his first solo series. (The year 1939 was an innovative one for superheroes, as Superman launched in his own title and Batman debuted as well.)

Originally, the Blue Beetle franchise centered on Dan Garret (also “Garrett” in some spellings), a police officer who became a masked vigilante with the help of a special vitamin that granted him superpowers. By 1966, DC Comics acquired the Charlton library and introduced an all-new Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, in Captain Atom #83. Kord was a scientist and inventor who used his tech to fight crime. DC then introduced Jaime Reyes in Infinite Crisis #3 and made him their newest, and current, Blue Beetle in 2006’s Infinite Crisis #5. Unlike Garret or Kord, Reyes’ powers come from an alien symbiotic scarab that he controls telepathically.

Other CGC-certified comics in this auction include:
