CGC-graded Silver Age First Appearances in Goldin Auction

Posted on 11/8/2023

Goldin's Fall Pop Culture Elite auction on November 18 includes the first appearances of Spider-Man and the Silver Age Flash.

Comics certified by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) that feature some of Marvel and DC’s most iconic first appearances are available in an upcoming Goldin auction. Bidding is already underway for the Fall Pop Culture Elite sale, which will be held November 18, 2023.

One of the highlights in the auction is an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 7). The book features the first appearance of Marvel Comics’ Spider-Man by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko in 1962. After the character’s immediate success in Amazing Fantasy #15, Marvel rushed Spider-Man into his own monthly series, and he has become one of the most recognizable superheroes of all time. Another copy of Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 1.0 (lot 96) is also offered in this sale.

In addition, this auction features a Showcase #4 graded CGC 4.0 (lot 69). The Flash first debuted in Flash Comics #1 in 1941 as Jay Garrick, who gained his super speed by inhaling chemicals in a lab experiment. In the 1960s, DC Comics gave birth to the Silver Age by reinventing a number of its Golden Age heroes for a new generation. Among them was the all-new Silver Age Flash, Barry Allen, introduced in this issue, who instead is given the gift of speed after being struck by lightning in his laboratory.

Other CGC-certified comics in this auction include:

  • an All-Star Comics #8 graded CGC 2.5 (lot 73)
  • an Amazing Spider-Man #129 graded CGC 9.6 (lot 100)
  • a Batman #1 graded CGC NG (lot 34)
